Jersey struck early and often Monday in Troy.
The Panthers erupted for a 15-4, five-inning Mississippi Valley Conference win over host Triad. Jersey scored in every inning, including four runs in the second inning and five runs in the fourth.
Kyle Steckel, Jordan Witt, Crick Kimble, Kyle Obertino, Jacob Witt and Brendan Kennedy all had two hits for the Panthers. Jersey had 15 hits in all to back winning pitcher Jake Varble. He allowed eight hits in five innings.
Steckel, Varble, Kimble and Obertino each drove in two runs. Jersey, 15-7 overall and 1-4 in the Valley, is scheduled to play Sciota West Prairie late Wednesday afternoon at Busch Stadium. Triad is 9-7 and 1-4.
The game will begin following the St. Louis Cardinals contest with the Milwaukee Brewers set to start at 12:45.
Alton 6, Mount Vernon 1 -- The 15-9 Redbirds made their trip to GCS Ballpark in Sauget a winning one.
They led 2-0 after the first inning and tacked on a four-run fourth to whip Mount Vernon. Alton is scheduled to welcome Edwardsville in a Southwestern Conference game at 4:30 Tuesday.
Noah Rathgeb had two hits and Nick Paulda supplied a pair of RBIs to support winning pitcher Matt Hopkins. He worked six innings, allowing two hits and one run. Hopkins fanned six, while providing a hit and RBI to aid his outing.The Redbirds had eight hits.
County meet postponed - The small-school portion of the Madison County Meet was postponed Monday because of inclement weather. It will resume at 4 p.m. Wednesday at East Alton-Wood River’s Memorial Stadium.
Boys and girls from Civic Memorial, Roxana, Metro East Lutheran, Marquette Catholic and Madison will join the Oilers on Orv Yocum Track.
Meanwhile, the large-school part of the county meet is slated for Tuesday afternoon at Alton’s Public School Stadium.
Edwardsville, Collinsville, Granite City, Highland and Triad team with the host Redbirds for boys and girls competition on Jim Wigger Track.
