Carlinville Class 2A Sectional – Southwestern’s bid to reach the sectional championship game ended a second short Tuesday.
Riverton shaded the Piasa Birds, 54-53, when Carlie Cuffle scored on a rebound shot at the buzzer. Southwestern protested that the basket came after time had expired, but the Hawks escaped with the victory.
Maddy Greeling scored 19 points, Kelsey Rhoades tallied 11 points and Ashlyn Ringhausen pitched in 10 more for Southwestern, which finished 26-3. The loss ended their six-game winning string.
Rhoades punched in a shot with 6.9 seconds remaining to give the Piasa Birds a one-point lead. She scored four of her points in the final minute.
However, Cuffle countered with the game-winner. She finished with 23 points and vaulted Riverton into the sectional title game against Pleasant Plains, a 49-42 winner over Pana. Plains and Pana will tangle at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Triad Class 3A Regional – Mississippi Valley Conference rivals Civic Memorial and Highland will clash at 9 p.m. Friday for the regional title.
CM, now 28-2, crushed Triad 58-28, while Highland edged Breese Mater Dei, 42-41, in overtime. It marked the Eagles' third win this season over the 10-17 Knights. Highland’s Olivia LaPorta made a free throw with no time remaining in giving the Bulldogs their win.
Highland and CM shared the Valley title this season. The Eagles have defeated the Bulldogs in two of three meetings this season.
North Greene Class 1A Sectional – Western Illinois Valley Conference rivals Carrollton and Winchester West Central will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday for the sectional title.
West Central eliminated Lebanon 50-36 on Monday and Carrollton ousted New Athens, 47-32. Carrollton, winner of the Calhoun Regional, is striving for its first sectional title since 2005. The Hawks captured small-school state titles in 2001 and 2002.
Madison 69, Jersey 65 – The Trojans couldn’t quite catch the Trojans in a nonconference game. Madison led 20-8 at the end of the first quarter and then had to hang on for the win.
Jake Varble (20 points), Kyle Steckel (19 points), Luke Shively (11 points) and Kyle Obertino (11 points) paced the host Panthers. They welcome Highland on Friday in a MVC game.
Steckel poured in 23 points last Friday during Jersey’s 52-46 win against conference rival Triad at Havens Gym. The Panthers and Knights divided their pair of Valley contests.
Metro East Lutheran 56, EA-WR 50 – Mike Stimac collected 12 points and 14 rebounds, but the Oilers feel to the Knights. Dillon Buck’s 13 points were best for EA-WR.
Hillsboro 58, Southwestern 53 -- Freshman Collin Baumgartner hit for 15 points in spurring the Piasa Birds, yet visiting Hillsboro recorded the victory. The Piasa Birds conclude SCC action Friday at Pana.
