It’ll be Hillsboro battling host Carlinville on Friday for the championship of the Cavaliers’ Class 2A Regional.
The Hiltoppers upset top-seeded Litchfield 45-36 in Tuesday’s first semifinal game, while the Cavaliers shaded the Piasa Birds 43-41 in the second one.
Dylan Miller, a 6-foot-8 junior center, scored 17 points to pace 17-12 Hillsboro, which ousted Gillespie on Monday in the play-in game. Litchfield finished 22-8.
Joeb Easterday’s 10 points and five rebounds guided 17-12 Carlinville by 16-13 Southwestern. Sophomore Tyler Rose of the Piasa Birds led all scorers with 13 points. It was the Cavaliers' second win in three games against the Piasa Birds this season.
Barry Stewart , who scored nine points, hit two free throws in the closing moments to provide the margin of victory. It was tied 41-41 with 1:49 to play.
Friday’s title game is set for 7 p.m. Carlinville hasn’t won a regional since 1994.
Bunker Hill Class 1A Regional: Carrollton and Calhoun registered victories at Hlafka Hall.
The second-seeded Hawks rolled over Mount Olive 64-34 and the Warriors beat Bunker Hill 58-51. Top-ranked Madison plays Wednesday night against Brussels.
Cody Leonard’s 25 points stirred Carrollton. Jake Niehaus had 14 points for Mount Olive. Mitchell Bick (19 points) and Gus Baalman (12 points) pointed Calhoun in the right direction. Kameron McLaughlin (24 points) of the Minutemen led all scorers.
Jacksonville Routt Class 1A Regional: Franklin pounded Jacksonville ISD 75-36 and North Greene downed Waverly 60-48. Top seed Greenfield plays at 6 p.m. Wednesday against New Berlin.
Waterloo 45, Jersey 39 – The Bulldogs clinched the outright Mississippi Valley Conference title by thwarting Jersey in Waterloo.
Shane Lenhardt scored 18 points for the winners. Kyle Steckel (13 points) and Luke Shively (12 points) were tops for the 17-10 Panthers. Jersey closed its regular season Friday against Mascoutah.
CM 53, Highland 52 – Tyler Campbell hit a 3-point shot at the buzzer as the Eagles won a Valley thriller in Highland. Campbell’s first trey of the season enabled Civic Memorial to sweep the Bulldogs this season. CM entertains Waterloo on Friday in its final regular-season game.
Edwardsville 54, O’Fallon 46 – The Edwardsville Tigers are undisputed champs of the Southwestern Conference following their win over O’Fallon. Armon Fletcher (22 points) and Shawn Roundtree (16 points) ignited the Tigers, 24-2 overall and 11-2 in the SWC.
Litchfield Dual Team Sectional – Roxana and Vandalia advanced to Saturday’s eight-team IHSA finals competition.
The Shells outscored West Frankfort 44-33 and Vandalia defeated Shelbyville 31-24 in sectional semifinals. Roxana, the Mount Olive Class 1A Regional champion, wrestles Plano at 9 a.m. Saturday in Bloomington’s U.S. Cellular Coliseum. Plano eliminated Lisle 48-28 at Coal City.
The Roxana-Plano survivor meets the Vandalia-Dakota victor in one semifinal. Saturday’s semifinals are at 2 and finals are scheduled for 6 p.m.
Peotone, LeRoy, Petersburg Porta and Sherrard also have teams at state. It’s the Shells' first appearance in the IHSA finals since 2003-04, when they finished second in Class 1A.
