It’s hard to believe, but another school year is ending. But before we embrace the summer, we have the spring sports’ postseason.
The Class 1A Civic Memorial Regional began on Tuesday in girls’ soccer with Marquette Catholic ending East Alton-Wood River’s season in an 8-0 win. Roxana and CM squared off with CM winning 5-0. The Explorers and Eagles meet at 4:30 p.m. today at the Bethalto Sports Complex to determine the regional champion. The winner advances to the Columbia Sectional semifinals at 5 p.m. on May 19.
The Alton Redbird girls’ soccer team is idle until 7 p.m. on May 19 when they delve into the 3A Edwardsville Regional at 7 p.m. against Granite City. The Birds are the No. 3 seed, while the Warriors are No. 2. No. 1 Edwardsville and No. 4 Quincy battle at 5 p.m. that night to set up the regional final at 6 p.m. on May 22. The winner heads to the Joliet Central Sectional.
Alton’s girls’ track and field team is at the 3A O’Fallon Sectional today. Junior phenom LaJarvia Brown is looking to begin her quest to protect her state championship in the triple jump from her sophomore campaign. She already set the state record in the triple jump this year.
Brown also hopes to improve on her sixth -lace finish in the long jump from a year ago and qualify for state in that event again. She has her eye on a berth in the 300-meter hurdles, too.
Freshman high jumper Katie Mans hopes to be a state qualifier. She holds the school record in the high jump.
Marquette and EA-WR’s girls’ track squads competed in the 1A Gillespie Sectional on Thursday, while CM and Roxana battled in the 2A Springfield Southeast Sectional on Thursday as well.
The girls’ state track and field meet is set for May 21-23 at Eastern Illinois’ O’Brien Stadium in Charleston.
As for boys’ track and field, Marquette and EA-WR are in the 17-team 1A Staunton Sectional on May 21, CM and Roxana compete in the 16-team 2A Springfield Lanphier Sectional on May 22 and Alton participates in the 17-team 3A Normal West Sectional on May 22.
The boys’ state meet is scheduled for May 28-30 in Charleston.
Beginning May 18 EA-WR and Roxana’s baseball and softball teams enter the postseason. Starting with softball, the Shells play host to the 2A Roxana Regional. They are the No. 4 seed and face No. 5 Southwestern at 4:30 p.m. on May 18. The winner of that game plays No. 1 seed Dupo at 4:30 p.m. on May 19. The No. 2 seeded Oilers take on No. 3 seed Staunton following that at 7 p.m.
The regional championship is set for 11 a.m. on May 23. The champion advances to the Williamsville Sectional.
For baseball, Roxana and EA-WR are a part of the 2A Dupo Regional. On May 18 the No. 4 seeded Shells will play host to No. 5 Dupo at 4:30 p.m., while No. 6 EA-WR heads to No. 3 Metro East Lutheran at 4:30 p.m. for play-in games.
The winner of Roxana and Dupo gets No. 1 seed Althoff at 4:30 p.m. May 20 in Dupo, while the winner between the Oilers and Knights plays No. 2 Wesclin at 4:30 p.m. May 21 in Dupo. The championship game is scheduled for 11 a.m. May 23. The winner feeds into the Vandalia Sectional.
The schedules for 3A and 4A baseball and softball were released on Wednesday following press time.
In softball, the Eagles and Explorers are pitted in the 3A CM Regional with Highland, Jersey and Triad. The regional champ propels into the Mascoutah Sectional.
Baseball sees CM and Marquette head to the 3A Jersey Regional to take on the Bulldogs, Panthers and Knights. The red-hot Eagles had won 12 of their lost 14 games entering this week, including seven in a row. The champ there heads to the Salem Sectional.
In 4A, Alton softball plays host to Edwardsville, Quincy and Granite City, while baseball travels to the Edwardsville Regional to square off with the host Tigers, Danville, Pekin and Quincy. In softball the sectional is at Normal West, while baseball plays in the Bloomington Sectional at Illinois Wesleyan.
The 3A and 4A baseball and softball regionals will begin the week of May 25.
All five of the Greater Alton area schools will be pitted in the Alton Sectional in boys’ tennis on May 22-23. Edwardsville, Metro East Lutheran and Jersey will join them. State is set for May 28-30 in Chicagoland.
Finally, Alton boys’ volleyball plays Granite City at 6 p.m. May 25 in the Granite City Regional. The winner faces top-seeded Edwardsville at 6 p.m. May 26. MELHS and East St. Louis follow at 7 p.m. and the regional final is scheduled for 6 p.m. May 27. The winner qualifies for the Alton Sectional.
