ALTON – Rainy weather proved unkind to the Metro East Bears on Wednesday in the first day of the American Senior Legion Great Lakes Baseball Regional.
The 27-8 Bears were washed out of their tournament opener against 20-1 Rockport, Ind. at Hopkins Field in Moore Park. Metro East is tentatively scheduled to debut Thursday morning — possibly at 9 a.m. — and then play another game later in the day. No firm time has been set for the Bears’ first game.
So five games, instead of four, are likely scheduled for Thursday. The tourney continues Friday and Saturday before concluding Sunday. The regional champ advances to the Legion World Series next week in Shelby, N.C.
If the Bears win their first game Thursday, they will play the last game late that night. If they lose Thursday morning, they will play the third game, sometime in the afternoon.
In the three games played Wednesday, Midland, Mich., defeated Paducah, Ky., 11-7; Madison, Wis., downed Troy, Ohio, 7-3; and Elgin beat Plover, Wis., 2-1 in 11 innings.
Elgin, the Illinois champion, improved to 35-1-1 in dropping Plover to 28-13. A bases-loaded walk decided it.
Madison shot to 22-7, while Troy fell to 36-14. And Midland improved to 42-6 in sending Paducah to 17-11.
