ALTON – Rain gained the upper hand Saturday in the Illinois Amateur Softball Association Class C Co-Ed Tournament at Moore Park.
The wet weather washed out all games and the tournament was suspended until Sunday, Aug. 24, also at Moore Park. No games are scheduled for this Sunday, Aug. 17.
“We called it off this (Saturday) afternoon,” tournament director Leroy Emerick. “We couldn’t get the fields ready and there is a possibility for more rain this weekend.”
Instead of keeping the remaining teams waiting to see if Sunday’s three fields would be playable, tourney officials suspended the competition of the tourney for a week.
“We met with Mike Haynes, the head of the Alton Recreation Department, and decided to resume it next Sunday,” Emerick said. There’s another tourney scheduled to play out Aug. 22-23 on the three Moore Park fields. Thus, the next open date is Aug. 24.
“We’re going to go at 8 that morning and try to finish the tournament on Sunday night,” Emerick said of the double-elimination competition. “We had an option of shortening the games, but we’d rather play them out fully.”
A total of 12 games were played Friday night, leaving 27 or 28 games remaining to determine a state champion. Defending Illinois champ Ball Park Motors of Jacksonville won its opener, 21-9, over Red White Wasted.
Sports Tap of Alton went 2-0 Friday night, while Catdaddy’s of Alton and Lotawata Creek of Fairview Heights both won their first games.
The Tap, sixth here last year, defeated VFOD Copper Penny, 15-5 and Miss-N-Hitters of Carbondale, 13-12, in eight innings. Sports Tap’s next game is against Construction Nation, which defeated Four R’s Barbeque, 14-12, in its opener.
Catdaddy’s outscored Streder Mechanical of Springfield, 17-16 and will meet QC Laminating of Moline in its next game. QC Laminating went 2-0 on Friday. It beat I’d Hit It, 16-12, and Cutting Edge of Godfrey, 16-1. Lotawata Creek shaded Nergenan Farm, 6-5.
Other first-day scores included: Fourth Street Lanes 14, L&W Tax Service 1; Danville Lineoff 14, A&A Refrigeration 4; VFOD Copper Penny 11, L&W Tax Service 4, and I’d Hit It 16, A&A Refrigeration 7. The last two losing teams were eliminated, leaving 16 squads from the original 18-team field.
