LATE FIELD GOAL LEADS SHELLS PAST PANA — The Roxana Shells prevailed in a dramatic affair on Saturday in Pana.
In a game that never got off the ground on Friday due to inclement weather, the Shells rode a roller coaster on Saturday in Pana, ending in a 37-35 win on a Logan Reardon field goal with 17 seconds remaining. Roxana is now 1-1 on the season after the victory.
The Shells raced out to an 8-0 lead after one quarter and led 20-15 at the break. They extended that to 34-21 after three quarters, but found themselves trailing 35-34 late, setting up Reardon's heroics.
Reardon also paced Roxana's rushing attack with 20 carries for 146 yards and two scores. Blake Vandiver chimed in with 22 carries for 96 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Luke Curtis guided the defense with eight solo tackles, six assisted and a sack.
Now the Shells look ahead to their home opener in Week 3 at 7 p.m. Friday vs. Hillsboro.
ALTON WINS TOURNEY TITLE — The Alton Redbirds won the championship of the Redbird Classic on Saturday.
Alton defeated Granite City 25-7, 25-19, Southwestern 25-10, 25-20 and Orchard Farm 27-25, 25-19 on Saturday to earn the championship of it's own tourney. AHS went 5-0 in the tournament to improve to 10-1 on the season.
Jordan Nolan earned tournament MVP and Megan Paulda and Rachel Cauley were all-tournament selections.
Triad took second in the tournament, followed by Southwestern, Granite City, Gillespie and Orchard Farm.
The Redbirds open Southwestern Conference play at Belleville East at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
ALTON ENDS IN SCORELESS STALEMATE WITH QUINCY — The Alton Redbirds welcomed Quincy to Gordon Moore Park Saturday for a non-conference affair, ending in a 0-0 tie.
Alton is now 2-1-2 on the young season.
Next up is a Southwestern Conference showdown at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Belleville East.
MARQUETTE FALLS TO ALTHOFF — The Marquette Catholic Explorers came up short vs. the Althoff Crusaders on Saturday.
Marquette received a goal from Jacob File, but it wasn't enough, as the Explorers lost 2-1. They are now 1-3-1 on the season.
Next up is a match with defending Class 3A state champion Edwardsville on the road at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
