Nick Cauley had everything going his way Thursday for the Alton Redbirds.
He pitched a five-inning no-hitter as the Birds walloped East St. Louis, 15-0, in a five-inning game at Hopkins Field. Cauley struck out 10 and walked one in spinning his gem.
The Redbirds scored six runs in the second inning and strung together a seven-run fourth to put the game out of reach. Bryan Hudson collected four hits and three RBIs to back the Birds. Nick Paulda had two hits and three RBIs.
Alton is scheduled to resume SWC action Tuesday at O’Fallon.
Jersey 10, Pittsfield 0 – Will Mortland tossed a three-hitter as the Panthers overwhelmed the visiting Saukees in a six-inning nonconference contest.
Hunter Bryant had three hits and drove in a run, while Lane Powers went 2-for-4 with a double for the 12-3 Panthers. They made 10 runs on 11 hits. Brenden Kennedy’s two-run, second-inning triple started Jersey in the right direction.
Jersey is at Civic Memorial in a rescheduled Mississippi Valley Conference game at 11 a.m. Friday.
Jersey 11, EA-WR 1 – The host Panthers used a seven-run sixth to put the finishing touches on a lopsided nonconference victory against the Oilers.
Macy Thurston and Jessica Bradfisch had two hits apiece for Jersey, which erupted for a 15-hit attack. Kayla Derstine batted in three runs and Ellie Tonsor had two RBIs in support of Thurston, the winning pitcher.
Thurston struck out three and pitched a two-hitter in helping the Panthers improve to 6-5. EA-WR scored in the top of the first inning.
Alton 16, East St. Louis 1 – Jordyn Roady twirled a five-inning one-hitter as the Redbirds romped over East St. Louis in SWC competition. She struck out 10 and the Birds exploded for 14 hits.
Alina Maher was 3-for-3 with a three-run home run and six RBI to pace AHS. Her homer came in an 11-run opening inning. Teammate Madison Bemis was 3-for-3 and had a pair of RBIs.
Morehead State 4, SIUE 0 – The Cougars lost to Morehead State in the quarterfinals of the Ohio Valley Conference Men’s Tournament in Paducah, Ky.
SIUE finished 11-10 overall and 5-4 in the OVC.
SIUE 4, Eastern Kentucky 2 -- Ryan Daniels pitched a complete game as the Cougars downed the Colonels in Ohio Valley Conference action in Richmond, Ky.
Daniels, gave up six hits as the Cougars improved to 10-9 in the OVC. They are 13-22 overall. Daniels, a junior right-hander, is 6-0.
"He sets the tone for us and comes to play every Friday night," SIUE coach Tony Stoecklin said. "I just love the way he goes about his business."
Alton High graduate Nick Lombardo went 4-for-5, including a bunt single, to spur SIUE's eight-hit offense.
