Alton 3, Granite City 2 – The visiting Redbirds improved to 8-3 and won for the third time in four days as they prevailed in a Southwestern Conference game.
A sacrifice fly in the seventh inning provided the margin of victory. Jacob Kanallakan of Alton had two hits, while pitchers Bryan Hudson, Matt Hopkins and Clint Cress split the mound duties. Kanallakan, Will Lewis and Hopkins all drove in runs.
The Birds had eight hits, same as the Warriors, and survived even though they made three errors. Alton will play host to Collinsville in a league game at 4:30 Thursday.
Jersey 19, Bunker Hill 1 – The 8-2 Panthers, who won a doubleheader Saturday, continued their winning ways by walloping the Minutemen. A 10-run second inning enabled the host Panthers to shoot ahead 14-1.
Jake Varble was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, one triple and six RBIs. Crick Kimble was 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs. Kyle Obertino collected two hits and three RBIs, while Luke Shively had two hits and a pair of RBIs.
Michael Sheldon pitched a two-hitter in the five-inning victory. The Panthers made 19 runs on 12 hits. Jersey will tangle with Marquette Catholic in a 7 p.m. game Thursday at Hopkins Field in Moore Park.
Roxana 5, Metro East Lutheran 4 – After the visiting Knights tied things in the top of the seventh, the Shells scored the winning run in the bottom of the inning.
Levi Wallace contributed three RBIs for Roxana and Logan Reardon picked up the victory in relief of Matt Hargrave.
Alton 17, Granite City 0 – The Redbirds enjoyed a runaway victory over Granite City in SWC play. An eight-run first inning put them on their way to a win.
Haley Longo was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Teammate Madison Bemis was 3-for-3 and knocked in two runs. Winning pitcher Brittany Roady and reliever Jordyn Roady limited the Warriors to one hit in the five-inning game.
Now 4-3 and 1-1, AHS is scheduled to play today at Highland in a nonconference contest and then entertain Collinsville at 4:30 Thursday in league competition.
Alton 8, O’Fallon 1 – Following their strong finish the past weekend in the Edwardsville Invitational, the Redbirds zipped by O’Fallon in SWC play.
Alton 5, Freeburg 1 – Putting all together on offense, the Redbirds raced past Freeburg in a nonconference match. Alton is slated to play host to Collinsville in conference competition at 6:45 Thursday.
The Birds have also announced the pairings for their annual tournament that starts April 21. Marquette Catholic, Waterloo and Orchard Farm of St. Charles, Mo., also are participating in the weeklong tournament. The Redbirds and the Explorers are positioned to play in the tourney final at 6:15 on Friday, April 21.
Alton girls win Quad - LaJarvia Brown won three individual events as the Redbirds finished first in a four-team girls meet at Carrollton.
She won the 100-meters (13.0 seconds), the long jump (16 feet, 5 inches) and the triple jump (38-5). Alton scored 113 points. Carrollton was runner-up with 63 points, followed by North Greene (50 points) and Madison (10 points).
In the boys competition, North Greene tabulated 79 points to outscore Alton, second with 73 points. Carrollton (57 points) and Madison (47 points) rounded out the scoring. The Birds won four events, including two relay runs.
