ALTON — It'll be a special night on Friday, Oct. 9, when the Alton Redbirds entertain the Granite City Warriors in a Southwestern Conference football game.
The Redbirds will throw out the welcome mat for former players, coaches and students at Public School Stadium.
At halftime, they will honor those involved with the Ed Yonkus Era of coaching at AHS. Yonkus guided the Redbirds to a 44-20-3 record from 1965-71 and had two unbeaten seasons. The 1970 team, which will toast its 45th anniversary Oct. 9, finished 10-0, best in school history. Yonkus died in 1990 at age 55.
"It's all-inclusive celebration," said organizer Richard Baird, a member of the 1970 team and 1971 AHS graduate. "We want to recognize the players, coaches and classmates from that era."
They will be saluted at halftime of the Redbirds' homecoming game. So it will be nothing short of a party atmosphere, Baird said.
"It was a great era for Alton football and coach Yonkus was such an amazing man," Baird said. "He was a leader of young men."
