Alton 4, Edwardsville 2 – Bryan Hudson’s pitching and one big inning made a difference Tuesday for the Alton Redbirds.
They defeated visiting Edwardsville, 4-2, in a Southwestern Conference game to get some payback for a lopsided loss to the Tigers last week at Tom Pile Field.
In the rematch at Moore Park, the Redbirds scored four times – all on unearned runs – in the sixth inning to overturn a 2-0 deficit. They made the most of four hits and Hudson, a junior left-hander, did the rest.
The 6-foot-7 Hudson tossed a three-hitter and struck out 10 to earn the victory. Wil Lewis and Hudson both had key hits for the Redbirds. Nick Paulda and Aaron Bonnell drove in runs.
The Redbirds are 16-9 overall and 3-5 in the SWC. It was the Tigers’ first conference defeat in eight games. They are 18-4 overall.
Alton 6, Edwardsville 2 – Turnabout was fair play for the Redbirds, who prevailed in Tiger Town after losing to Edwardsville, 19-1, last week at AHS.
A five-run seventh propelled the Redbirds,13-7 overall and 4-3 in the SWC. The Tigers dropped to 18-3 and 5-2.
Winning pitcher Morgan Butler snapped a 1-1 tie in the top of the seventh with a two-out, two-run single. Georgia Dodson added a single and Haley Longo blasted a three-run double to cap the big inning. Alina Maher of AHS had a run-scoring single in the first inning.
Butler worked the final three innings after Brittany Roady pitched the first four innings.
Tigers sweep county – Edwardsville swept to a pair of titles in the large-school portion of the Madison County Meet at Public School Stadium. The Tigers finished first in both the boys and girls six-team competition on Wigger Track. Edwardsville’s guys had 196 points and the girls amassed 186 points.
Hurdlers/sprinters Craig James and Isaiah Michl led the way for the Edwardsville guys. Kristen Dowell sparked the EHS girls.
Sophomore LaJarvia Brown of Alton won the long jump (17 feet, 8 inches), the triple jump (a a county record 37-11) and was runner-up to Granite City’s Robyn Pointer in the 200-meters. Greg Cross of AHS won the boys’ 200-meters (22.58 seconds).
Collinsville (122.5 points), Triad (117), Highland (64.5), Alton (34) and Granite City (23) followed Edwardsville in the boys’ competition. It was Highland (106.5), Triad (97), Granite City (66), Alton (63.5) and Collinsville (34) trailing champ Edwardsville in the girls’ action.
The small-school boys and girls will compete Wednesday on East Alton-Wood River’s Orv Yocum Track in Memorial Stadium. Competition, which was washed out Monday because of inclement weather, is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
Roxana, Civic Memorial, Marquette Catholic, Metro East Lutheran, Madison and the host Oilers are in the field.
Alton 9, Granite City 0 – By shutting out the Warriors, the Redbirds improved to 10-4 overall and 4-1 in the SWC. Allan Bower, Carl Stradal, Kain Henson, Adam Ruckman, Christian Freeman and Jackson Scheiter scored singles wins for Alton.
The doubles teams of Max Sutton/Alex Raymond, Jeff Northway/Jared Boren and Galvin Earl/Jordan Salvador won in doubles.
