The Alton Middle School baseball field project includes two block dugouts, a new concrete backstop with a net/cable system, a laser-graded infield and an outfield fence.
ALTON – The Alton Community Unit School District 11 has announced that a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new Alton Middle School baseball field will take place at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16. The entire community is encouraged to attend.
The project started in December 2012 and construction didn’t begin until August 2013. The project includes two block dugouts, a new concrete backstop with a net/cable system, a laser-graded infield and an outfield fence. Construction was complete June 30. The ceremony will feature guest speakers, a ribbon-cutting and an individual will throw out the first pitch. After the ceremony, the eighth-grade team will play a doubleheader vs. Piasa Southwestern starting at 9 a.m. The seventh-grade team will play Jerseyville St. Francis following the eighth-grade game.
The school district previously announced a $63,562 contribution from the Baseball Tomorrow Fund to aid in the completion of the project. BTF, a joint initiative of Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association, provided funding for renovation of the baseball field at Alton Middle School.
“Our main goal is to increase participation in the game of baseball and softball,” AMS PE teacher and head eighth-grade baseball coach Brett J. Huff said. “Renovating the field at AMS will benefit our community to help us reach our goal. We are thankful for the Baseball Tomorrow Fund and the opportunity they have given us.”
