ROXANA — When Carlinville needed production Friday, the Cavaliers manufactured it in different ways — much to Roxana’s chagrin.
The Shells couldn’t corral the Cavies and suffered a 48-24 South Central Conference setback in the season opener for both teams at Charles Raich Field. Carlinville thus defeated Roxana for the 17th time in the last 19 games.
“ They had a good game plan and executed it well,” Shells’ coach Pat Keith said of the Cavaliers. “And when we needed a stop, we couldn’t get it.”
The visitors shot in front 21-0 midway through the second quarter, but the Shells fought back. They closed to within 28-24 halfway through the third quarter, yet the Cavies went on another binge. They scored the final 20 points to turn it into a lopsided victory.
So Carlinville scored the game’s first three touchdowns and then the last three TDs. The Cavaliers accounted for nearly 450 yards of offense.
“ I thought our kids did a great job and we liked the pace of the game,” Carlinville coach Chad Easterday said of his team’s no-huddle offense. “Roxana’s three turnovers helped us and our special teams really did a good job.”
Quarterback Adam Walton and receiver Brady Jamieson proved to be a dynamic duo for the winners. Walton, a junior who replaced the graduated Joeb Easterday, completed 15 of 19 passes for 191 yards.
"He made some great reads," coach Easterday said of Walton. "We lost a great quarterback (to graduation) but we have another great one."
Jamieson, a rangy 6-foot-3 junior, snared eight passes for 73 yards, including four touchdowns — three in the third quarter. Overall, he had scoring receptions of 10, 7, 12 and 5 yards. It was the 12-yarder, his third of the night that hiked Carlinville’s lead to 34-24 with 4:10 remaining in the third quarter. The Shells never recovered from it.
“ He’s a kid who played behind two seniors last year,” Easterday said of Jamieson. “He had a big game tonight and his catch (third TD) in the end zone turned the tide for us.”
Keith added, “He is a good athlete and he made some big plays for them.”
Teammates Jacob Dixon and Brady Egelhoff combined efforts to ramble for three touchdowns and more than 200 yards rushing. Easterday figured the Cavaliers needed to maintain a potent attack to extend their momentum.Chandler Seago pitched in defensively with a key third quarter interception following Jamieson's third TD.
“ We did a great job of keeping our composure,” he said. “We know that you don’t stop Roxana’s offense. You just have to contain them.”
Blake Vandiver spurred the Shells with two touchdowns. He rushed for a 34-yard score and snared a 37-yard TD pass from Chance Foss. Vandiver ran for 88 yards.
Teammate Trey Kelley scored on a 7-yard run with 1:50 to play in the second quarter as the Shells sliced the Cavaliers’ lead to 21-8 by halftime. Kelly wound up with a pair of conversion runs and Jared Foiles added another one.
Foss completed 6 of 16 passes for 106 yards after entering the game with 2:06 to play in the first half. He had to sit out the first quarter and most of the second one as a disciplinary measure. Zack Golenor started at quarterback, completed two passes and ran for 31 yards to set up Kelley’s score.
Keith said Foss’ early-game absence wasn’t the cause for the Shells’ troubles. Their own mistakes and inconsistent defense kept them from challenging the Cavaliers and possibly catching them. A four-point second half deficit eventually turned into a 24-point loss.
“ We did some things right, but we have a lot of work to do,” Keith said. “We learned some things in this game and now we have to get ready for Pana (at home) next week.
"We need to be better on some alignments and assignments. It was disappointing. But we will get things figured out and we'll be all right.”
