Roxana's Josh Rudd during the Shells 13-3 shutout over East Alton-Wood River Thursday
The Roxana Shells' offense at home Thursday was just too much for East Alton-Wood River, resulting in a 13-3 rout of the Oilers during the Shells' first game this year.
The Oilers are now 0-2 after losing at home Tuesday to Greenville 10-0.
“This first week is a little tough for us,” first-year Oiler coach Kyle Duncan said. “We’re a young team and even though we’ve lost by wide margins in the last two games, we are progressively getting better and learning to play with one another.”
Duncan said a strong start would have given his team a chance to hang with Roxana, but the Shells used big first and third innings to give themselves the advantage early on. Matt Hargrave and Levi Wallace led Roxana with three hits each, with Nelson Martz getting a pair of hits as well.
Wallace is returning with his team’s best batting average at .393, and with Martz following closely behind, Roxana head coach Nathan Smay said these two pose their team's biggest offensive threat heading into this season.
“We’ve returned our entire pitching staff from last season,” Smay said. “After placing fourth in our conference last year we’re looking to start off big and make a statement early on.”
The Shells are returning from a 14-19 season, losing four seniors from last year’s team. However, Smay returns his entire pitching staff from last season.
Hargrave led the Shells with four RBIs, alongside Wallace’s three, to help the Shells win a big game at home.
The Shells will play again Saturday at Waterloo Gibault.
