SHELLS KEEP ROLLING — Roxana made it six consecutive victories by defeating Staunton, 3-0, in a South Central Conference match Tuesday. The Shells improved to 12-5.
Freshman Emma Lucas extended her scoring ways for Roxana. She punched in two goals to give her 23 goals this season. Lucas also has seven assists for 53 points.
Sydney Owsley also scored for Roxana, which hasn’t lost since April 20.
OILERS ROUT PIASA BIRDS – Visiting East Alton-Wood River won its second in succession by blasting Southwestern, 11-3, in nonconference action. The Oilers, erupting for their highest scoring output of the season, improved to 5-13. They had previously scored eight goals in a win over North County Tech of St. Louis.
TIGERS TRIM REDBIRDS – Host Edwardsville defeated Alton, 4-1, and tallied the final four goals after the Redbirds grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first half.
Brianna Hatfield got Alton’s lone goal as the Redbirds dropped to 4-9-1 overall and 0-4 in the SWC. Lexi Norton tallied twice for Edwardsville, which lifted its record to 15-2-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the conference.
Jocelyn Wagner and Ashlin West also scored for Edwardsville, which has won seven in a row and nine of 10 matches.
BULLDOGS BLANK EAGLES – Highland got some payback on Civic Memorial by registering a 4-0 Mississippi Valley Conference win at home. The Eagles logged a 2-1 victory over the Bulldogs back on March 31 in Bethalto.
CM dipped to 9-7-1 overall and 4-5-1 in the Valley. Highland shot its record to 6-9 overall and 3-4-1 in the league.
SHELLS WALLOP PANTHERS – Logan Reardon supplied plenty of heavy hitting as Roxana overpowered Litchfield, 15-4, in a five-inning South Central Conference game.
He went 2-for-3 with a home run and drove in three runs. Teammates Tanner Davis, Adam Moore and Austin Presley all added two RBIs as the Shells improved to 11-12. Roxana is scheduled to play Thursday at Gillespie, Friday at Carlinville and Saturday at Vandalia.
SHELLS EDGE LITCHFIELD – Hannah Rexford did it all as Roxana topped Litchfield, 8-7 in SCC play.
The freshman left-hander struck out 13 and snared the victory. She also went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs. Teammates Abbey Palen and Phoebe Booher also contributed two RBIs apiece.
REDBIRDS BOW IN THRILLER – Host Collinsville shaded Alton, 8-7 in a SWC game and sent the Redbirds to 13-11 overall and 3-7 in the conference.
Miranda Hudson went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs to pace the Birds. Savannah Fisher had two hits and batted in a run.
GIRLS' TRACK AND FIELD
PANA WINS SCC GIRLS MEET – Pana scored 144 to win the conference competition at Roxana. Carlinville finished second with 104 points and Litchfield took third with 90 points.
Other teams and scores were: Vandalia (74 points), Greenville (45), Gillespie (44), Staunton (18), Southwestern (15), Hillsboro (14) and Roxana (10).
The Shells’ 4x800-meter relay team of Jessica Baggett, Katrina Oldendorph, Kryston Scifres and Shalyn Edwards finished second in 10 minutes, 32.6 seconds. Carlinville won it in 10:28.7.
Vandalia’s Emma Meyer was among the top athletes in the 10-school competition. She finished first in the pole vault (10 feet), the triple jump (33-4.5) and the 100-meters (12.9). Carlinville’s Amanda Schmidt snared honors in the long jump (15-9.5), the 100-meter high hurdles (15.91) and the 300-meter low hurdles (47.72).
BIRDS FALL TO LANCERS – Belleville East downed visiting Alton, 8-1, in a SWC affair. The Redbirds’ doubles team of Carl Stradal and Drew Hays scored the team’s only win. They scored a 6-4, 7-5 victory over East’s Clayton Baldus and Sam Kellow.
The Redbirds, 4-10 overall and 2-3 in the SWC, play Saturday in Dunlap against Lemont, Urbana University High and the host team.
