Marquette made it a clean sweep of visiting Red Bud in nonconference play Saturday. The Explorers did it with a pair of one-run victories.
They prevailed 4-3 in the first game and then won the second one, 5-4.
The Musketeers scored two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the opener, but the Explorers got the winner in the bottom of the inning. They had 10 hits in all.
Shortstop Austin Siener collected two hits and drove in a run to spur Marquette. Aaron Mattix-Wand also had two hits to back winning pitcher Max Goepel.
Trailing 4-3 in the second game, Marquette tied it up in the fifth and won in the sixth. The Explorers scored five times on seven hits and benefited from two Red Bud errors. Jacob Eggering and Steven Elliott shared the mound duties.
Now 8-5, Marquette is scheduled to welcome Litchfield on Monday.
Southwestern splits pair -- The Piasa Birds defeated Freeburg, 10-5, but bowed to South Central Conference rival Greenville, 2-1. The Comets also defeated Freeburg, 1-0.
Jersey 7, Roxana 1 – Jersey’s Macy Thurston went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs, while Bethany Muenstermann had two hits, including a triple.
Delaney Bray twirled a four-hitter and allowed only a third-inning run for the Panthers.
Ashley Meyers and Cindy Scroggins both had two hits to account for Roxana’s offense.
Jersey 9-8, Marquette 4-6 -- Improving to 9-5, The Panthers won a doubleheader from the Explorers. Macy and McKenzie Thurston both hit home runs for Jersey in the first game and Macy Thurston was the winning pitcher.
Jessica Bradfisch of Jersey had two hits in the second game as the Panthers withstood a five-run second inning.Maddie Youngblood and Morgan Wiedman of the Explorers teamed for three hits and three RBIs.
O’Fallon Tournament – Southwestern went 1-5 in this powerful two-day tourney that ended Saturday.
The Piasa Birds defeated DuQuoin 3-1 the second day following a 15-4, five-inning loss to Triad. Bailee Stahl pitched a seven-hitter against DuQuoin as Southwestern improved to 4-9.
Lindsey Snyder was 2-for-3 with a single and home run in the victory.
On Friday, Southwestern lost to Edwardsville, 15-1; O’Fallon, 10-3; and Dupo, 8-2. Hannah Wilfong, Katie Wooldridge and Randi Hopkins of the Piasa Birds all had two hits against Dupo. Wilfong reached base four times.
Edwardsville went 6-0 to win the tourney title.The Tigers won three games Friday and three more on Saturday.
Alton wins tournament -- The Redbirds scored 37 points to finish first in their Doubles Invitational at AHS. Belleville Althoff was runner-up with 31 points and St. Louis U. High came in third with 28 points. Marquette scored 7.5 points.
Carl Stradal and Jackson Schieter of the Redbirds joined teammates Allan Bower and Christian Freeman, plus Kain Henson and Adam Ruckman, as doubles champions.
SIUE 3-3, Belmont 2-1 – It’s seven straight in the Ohio Valley Conference for SIUE after the Cougars won two against Belmont in Nashville.
SIUE is 24-19 overall and 16-3 in the OVC. Haley Chamber pitched a four-hitter in the first game and hiked her conference record to 11-1. She struck out nine.
Edwardsville High graduate Erin Greenwalt allowed only three hits – none after the first inning - of the second game. She fanned nine and posted her ninth win of the season.
The Cougars welcome Evansville at 5 p.m. Thursday in their final nonconference game of the season.
Eastern Kentucky 8, SIUE 3 – Outfielder Nick Lombardo, an Alton High grad, had three hits, but the Cougars fell in OVC action. SIUE is 13-24 overall and 10-11 in the conference.
The Cougars resume play Wednesday with a 6 p.m. nonconference game at Bradley.
