SHELLS, OILERS FALL AT DUPO — Host Dupo bested Roxana, 38-28, and Marissa defeated East Alton-Wood River, 44-20, in girls’ basketball action Wednesday at the Dupo Classic Cat.
The Tigers’ win over the Shells pushed them into Saturday’s championship game against New Athens. Roxana, now 1-1, will play for third place at 4 p.m. Saturday against Valmeyer.
Abby Palen’s eight points led the Shells, who started slowly. They trailed 7-3 at the end of the first quarter and 12-8 at halftime.
However, Roxana grabbed a 23-21 advantage after three quarters, only to be outscored 17-5 in the final period. Hannah Rexford (seven points) and Sara Kreutztrager (six points) also contributed to the Shells’ cause.
Marissa’s win over 0-2 EA-WR enabled the Meteors to advance into Saturday’s consolation finals and meet Waterloo for fifth place. The Oilers will play for the Nashville JV team for seventh place at 11 a.m.
The Oilers dropped behind 21-10 halftime and never could get going against Marissa. Carly Campbell scored 10 points and Courtney Beneke added six more to spark them.
