Logan Reardon liked what the Roxana Shells did for him in the first inning Monday.
They scored five runs and made his pitching job easier. Reardon gave up just three hits as Roxana walloped Hillsboro, 12-1, in a six-inning South Central Conference game.
Nelson Martz collected three hits and two RBIs as the Shells shot ahead 7-0 by the second inning. A four-run sixth put the finishing touches on the victory.
Levi Wallace batted in three runs and Reardon helped himself with two hits as the Shells struck for 13 hits. Reardon struck out nine in a complete-game effort.
Marquette 5, Litchfield 3 – A 12-hit outburst guided the Explorers past the Purple Panthers in a nonconference contest.
Geoffrey Ferguson and Danny Holtz both strung together three hits for the winners. Winning pitcher Stephen Peuterbaugh had two RBIs.
Peuterbaugh struck out eight and scattered seven hits in a complete-game effort.
Calhoun 3, Alton 0 – Grace Baalman pitched a one-hitter and struck out 12 as 15-2 Calhoun defeated 9-5 Alton in Hardin.
Baalman permitted only Haley Longo’s single in the sixth inning. The Warriors built a 3-0 lead by the third and Baalman took charge. She improved to 12-2.
EA-WR 14, Granite City 2 – Scoring seven times in the third inning, the Oilers shot in front 11-1 and blasted the host Warriors in five innings. East Alton-Wood River had 10 hits and benefited from six Granite City errors.
Natalie Mundel of the Oilers had a big day with three hits and three RBIs. Emme Flanigan added two hits. Heather Martin and Katie Hall each supplied two RBIs.
Kaleigh Young was the winning pitcher. She threw all five innings and yielded five hits while striking out four.
Roxana 15, Hillsboro 4 – Ashley Meyers directed a potent offense in the Shells’ SCC win over Hillsboro. Meyers went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBIs.
Roxana scored six times in the second inning to give winning pitcher Andrea Lawson ample support. Kelsey Flatt and Peyton Arnett both contributed two hits. The Shells had 11 hits in all.
Relays postponed – Monday’s Roxana Girls Relays were postponed because of wet weather and rescheduled for Tuesday.
Alton, which is participating at Roxana, will play host to its girls’ invitational on Thursday at Public School Stadium. The Redbirds also will serve as the host school for the large-school portion of the Madison County Meet on Tuesday, April 29. The small-school guys and girls will run Monday, April 28, at EA-WR.
