The St. Louis Scott Gallagher U18 Metro boys’ soccer team is headed for the national tournament after winning the NPL Regionals last month in Chicago.
The team consists of boys from Alton, Edwardsville, Collinsville, St. Louis University High School, St. Louis School of the Arts, Belleville East, O’Fallon, Althoff, Marion and Harrisburg.
The boys had to qualify through the NPL league to attend the regional tournament. They played four games and were undefeated.
At the regional, the team opened with a 2-0 win over Campton United on June 13. They followed that with a 3-2 victory over Chicago Magic on June 14.
On June 15, the SLSG U18 squad played to a scoreless tie with FC Wisconsin. On June 16, the boys clinched a trip to nationals with a 3-1 double-overtime win over Campton.
The NPL national tourney runs through July 13 in Indiana.
Many of the boys on the team were on the SLSG Metro U14 national championship team. They were the first group to win a national title for SLSG.
The same boys went on to be regional champions for the SLSG Metro U16 team, which went to the semifinals at nationals in 2014 in North Carolina.
Trent Hawkins broke his wrist in the final game of the regional. He had surgery last Monday and is now sporting three pins and a plate.
The team is Micah Wrigley, Jared Hamann, Destin Garst, Landon Paul, Jake Koenig, Andrew Mullican, Grant Bauer, Trent Hawkins, Ryan Hurry, Eric Ferenbach, Greg Niven, Marcus Taylor, Adam Newman, Justin Schmidt and Brett Langley. They are coached by Jeff Besserman and assistant coach Beau Farrell.
Five players have signed to play soccer. Micah Wrigley of Alton will play for McKendree. Andrew Mullican of Edwardsville High School will play at the University of Illinois-Springfield. Grant Bauer, of Collinsville, also has signed with UI-Springfield.
Landon Paul, of Edwardsville, will play at Maryville University. Brett Langley, of Collinsville, will play at the University of Indianapolis.
