The Alton Middle School softball team is one step away from the Illinois Elementary School Association state tournament.
The Junior Redbirds won the Class AA Regional 14 championship on Sept. 13 after beating Edwardsville Liberty 6-3 in the title game at Liberty Middle School. AMS, which is the No. 1 seed in the six-team regional tournament, defeated North Mac 10-0 in the semifinals on Sept. 12 to advance to the title game.
The Junior Redbirds will play the Glenwood Middle School Titans in the Sectional G championship game at 11 a.m. on Sept. 17 at Edwardsville High School. AMS will take a 17-1 record into the contest.
The winner of the sectional championship will play either Ottawa Shepherd or Normal Parkside in the first round of the state tournament at 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 23 at Champion Fields in Normal. Shepherd and Parkside will square off in the Sectional C title game on Sept. 17 in Wenona.
