It doesn’t seem possible, but my sixth-month anniversary as the sports coordinator for AdVantage News is next month (February). I’m having a blast in my new role here.
Since I have your attention, allow me to remind you of the great content we’ve had and more coming soon.
Early in my tenure here, we implemented this weekly column, as well as the weekly high school sports schedule. The feedback we’re getting is great.
With contributors Steve Porter and Diane Cox, we’ve offered the best features and team updates daily, while keeping our weekly print pages timely. Many consider our website as the “daily paper” and the printed edition as our weekly magazine. Check out AdVantageNews.com to see daily roundups and daily sports coverage of your teams.
We’ve expanded the sports section to include a weekly photo page featuring action shots taken at games of Alton, Marquette Catholic, Civic Memorial, EA-WR and Roxana.
Most recently, you may have noticed our midseason “caps” for winter sports. It’s a recapitulation of all sports at each prep program of the five Greater Alton area schools. Last week’s featured wrestling and boys’ and girls’ bowling. This week’s covers ice hockey and boys’ and girls’ basketball.
For me, the most exciting new addition coming to our sports section is weekly local sports trivia. Greater Alton has plethora of local sports history and I’m a trivia junkie. I think this will be fun and interactive for all of us. Since I have a local sports encyclopedia (Steve Porter) at my fingertips, I get as much useful (or useless) knowledge from that resource as possible.
In the coming weeks, at the bottom of this column, I’ll offer a local sports trivia question involving the Redbirds, Explorers, Eagles, Oilers, Shells, local golf courses, Lewis and Clark Community College and more.
To answer the question, you will complete an entry at AdVantageNews.com. I will gather all of the correct answers and pick a weekly winner. (Don’t worry, Steve Porter is not allowed to win.)
As a winner, you will get your name in the paper and receive a prize donated by a local sponsor.
Put your thinking cap on and get ready for local sports trivia. This will be fun.
If you have ideas, potential trivia questions or suggestions you think will improve our sports pages, email them to me at email@example.com. I look forward to hearing from you and I’m happy you are enjoying what we are doing at AdVantage News Sports.
