ALTON BOWS IN OPENER – Undefeated Edwardsville retained its winning ways by zipping past Alton, 8-1, in Tuesday’s opener of the MVCHA Class 2A North playoff finals at the East Alton Ice Arena.
Game 2 of the best-of-three series is set for 8:45 p.m. Thursday night at EAIA. If needed, Game 3 will be played next Monday, also in East Alton.
Edwardsville improved to 19-0. Alton dropped to 16-6, including three losses to the Tigers. The North winner faces the South survivor for the 2A championship. Triad and O’Fallon are battling for the South championship.
Tyler Hinterser scored three times for the Tigers, who have outscored the Redbirds by a composite 21-1 in their three games. Tyler Schaeffer (twice), Jake Aurello, Carson Lewis and Brendan Raftery scored for Edwardsville, which built a 6-0 lead. Schaeffer has tallied 45 goals this season.
Alex Rubin scored Alton’s goal with 4:39 remaining in the second period. The Tigers outshot the Redbirds 28-15
EXPLORERS EDGE GIBAULT – Marquette Catholic won another close one, shading visiting Waterloo Gibault, 39-38, in a nonconference game. The 18-9 Explorers have won six games by four points or fewer.
The Explorers fell behind 11-4 at the end of the first quarter and trailed 23-20 at half. Gibault led 33-29 after three quarters before Marquette outscored the Hawks 10-5 in the fourth quarter.
Junior guard Shandon Boone scored 17 points to power the Explorers. Max Goepel pitched in nine points. Jacob Rueter’s 19 points powered Gibault. Trevor Davis had 10 points.
Marquette travels to Breese Central on Friday for its regular-season finale. Then the Explorers will compete in the Class 3A Jersey Regional.
SHELLS TOP VANDALS – Roxana started quickly and never let up in routing host Vandalia, 72-59, for a South Central Conference victory.
The Shells led 21-12 after the first quarter and 39-26 at halftime. Trace Gentry paced them with 27 points, while Zach Golenor pitched in 19 points. Roxana connected on 25 shots, including seven 3-pointers.
Now 13-15, Roxana plays host to Hillsboro on Friday in its final SCC game. The Shells then compete next week in the Class 2A Southwestern Regional. They are seeded second behind the host Piasa Birds.
OILERS FALL TO KNIGHTS – Blake Marks scored 29 points, but it wasn’t enough as host East Alton-Wood River bowed to Metro East Lutheran, 86-74, in a Prairie State Conference game.
Mike Stimac collected 20 points and 13 rebounds for the Oilers, who dropped to 10-16. Teddy Fifer and Jason Johnson both scored 28 points for MELHS, which led 42-37 at half. The Knights then outscored the Oilers 27-13 in the decisive third quarter.
Overall, Fifer and Johnson teamed to make 23 of 30 shots. Johnson made 12 of 13 attempts and Fifer was 11 of 17.
EA-WR plays at Greenville on Friday and entertains Valmeyer on Saturday to finish its regular-season schedule. The Oilers meet Carlinville on Monday in the opening game of the Class 2A Southwestern Regional.
JERSEY REGIONAL RESUMES – Two semifinal games are scheduled tonight in the Class 3A Jersey Regional.
Triad battles top-seeded Highland at 6 p.m., while second-seeded Civic Memorial clashes with third-ranked Breese Mater Dei at 7:30. The regional championship game is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, with the winner advancing to the Highland Sectional.
Triad, the No. 4 seed, moved into the regional semifinals by defeating host Jersey, 56-44, in Tuesday’s lone game.
SEMIFINALS SET AT ALTON -- A pair of games are scheduled tonight in the semifinals of the Class 4A Alton Regional.
Top-ranked Edwardsville awaits Granite City at 6 p.m., while Alton meets second-seeded Pekin at 7:30. The winners advance to the 7 p.m. championship game Friday.
In Monday's lone game, Granite City won its third game of the season by ousting Quincy, 38-26.
