ALTON — The Special Olympics is hosting its Softball Slamboree at Gordon Moore Park July 22-24.
This is a girls’ fast-pitch softball tournament for those age 10 to 16. Proceeds benefit the Special Olympics of Illinois. This organization has a tremendous following and expects up to 80 teams from around the Midwest traveling to Alton for the weekend.
“This unique tournament provides fun for all with an Olympic-style opening ceremony, bat raffles, coach contests and pairing with Special Olympics athletes,” Justin Dunning of Special Olympics Illinois said.
All teams are guaranteed a minimum of three games.
Greater Midwest Baseball is considered to be one of the most reputable baseball tournament providers in the country and the best youth baseball tournament provider in the St. Louis area. Established in 2010, the organization had more than 4,000 teams play in 2015. Teams come from all over the Midwest to play in GMB tournaments. They are bringing the Pukka Cap Classic to Gordon Moore Park June 3-5. Age groups range from age 9-14.
Lloyd Hopkins Field also will play host to the 2016 GMB-NABF World Qualifier June 10-12. This is for the 16U (Junior Division) age bracket. Baseball teams will come from across the region over the course of these two weekends for a chance to compete at Nationals in Knoxville, Tenn.
