BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Julian Harvey of Edwardsville and Nick Matthews of Cisne, Ill., of SIUE men's track and field have each earned Ohio Valley Conference postseason awards for their performances during the 2016 season.
Harvey earned the OVC Male Field Athlete of the Year. He also was named the OVC Indoor Male Field Athlete of the Year earlier this year.
Harvey is currently qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary rounds in two events. He is No. 7 in the long jump with his mark of 25 feet, 11.5 inches set at the Arkansas Spring Invitational. This mark puts Harvey as the No. 18 American long jumper. He also is No. 24 on the qualifying list in the high jump with a mark of 7-1.5 and is the OVC leader in both the high jump and long jump.
"Julian's body of work this season is one for the record books as one of the best seasons a student-athlete can have," SIUE Interim Head Coach Scott Block said. "He is an impressive athlete, student and teammate, and he truly deserves this award."
Matthews was named the OVC Male Freshman of the Year. He is the team leader in the javelin with a mark of 177-7, and has placed in the top five in javelin in six meets this season and is No. 2 in the OVC.
Matthews also has personal bests of 190-8 in the hammer, which is the fourth-best mark in the OVC this season. This mark puts him as the No. 7 American Junior (under the age of 20) in the event.
"Nick fits the bill for what commitment looks like," Block said. "He is a tremendous talent and I am excited to see what he is capable of. Nick is a small town boy with a true blue collar work ethic."
SIUE men's and women's track and field heads to Nashville to compete in the OVC Championships May 13-14.
