Zachary Llewellyn enjoyed a solid senior campaign with the Alton Redbirds as an offensive lineman in football and a thrower in track and field.
In the end it was Llewellyn's prowess as a thrower for AHS which landed him in a joyous situation. He inked a letter of intent to continue his track and field career at McKendree University in Lebanon on April 21.
After signing his scholarship, Llewellyn went on to qualify for the 3A state meet in both the shot put and the discus. Unfortunately, he was unable to progress through the preliminaries to the state finals on the second day.
He threw 55 feet, 3 inches in the shot put to finish third at the 3A Collinsville Sectional and 160-3 in the discus to qualify for state in both events. His throw of 54-9 in the shot and 150-2 in the discus during the prelims on May 27 at state weren't enough to push him through.
He joins a Bearcats' team that finished third in the Great Lakes Valley Conference in 2016. McKendree had a young throws group the past season, with a redshirt freshman and two sophomores. Llewellyn will look to get in the mix too next season.
There was a small ceremony celebrating Llewellyn's signing at McKendree on April 21 at AHS. Parents, coaches and teammates were in attendance to congratulate him on continuing his track and field career.
