The men’s Trailblazer soccer team celebrates its Region 24 victory after the game on Oct. 31.
GODFREY – It’s on to the nationals for the Lewis and Clark Community College men’s soccer team.
The Trailblazers sailed past Illinois Central College of East Peoria 3-0 last weekend to become the Region 24 champions and secure a spot in the NJCAA Division I finals.
LCCC tuned up for the nationals by prevailing in the district championship against Jefferson College, 1-0, on Friday afternoon in Hillsboro, Mo. Both teams are guaranteed spots in the nationals, set for Nov. 16-21 in Axton, Va. The Trailblazers will carry a 17-3-1 record to Virginia. Jeffferson is 15-3, including a 4-3 win over LCCC last month,
Lochlan Reus scored all three goals in the Trailblazers’ win over Illinois Central. He got one in the first half and two in the second half. His second goal, early in the second half, came on a penalty kick.
“It was a tough game,” LCCC coach Tim Rooney said. “Weather conditions were brutal. It was raining and the field was soggy, which made for tough footing, but overall, we did a good job defensively and offensively.”
He’s hoping the Trailblazers will continue their strong play against Jefferson and then on into the nationals.
“Hopefully, we go into the national championships healthy,” Rooney said. “We’ve been playing pretty good this last portion of the season, and if we continue on, we should have a chance to be very competitive in the tournament.”
