For the second time in as many days, a local high school softball pitcher threw a perfect game.
Alton’s Jordyn Roady did it Tuesday in the Redbirds’ 14-0, five-inning Southwestern Conference win over visiting East St. Louis.
On Monday, East Alton-Wood River’s Toria Beachum spun a seven-inning perfect game in an 8-0 victory over Hillsboro. She struck out 14.
Roady fanned 12 of the 15 Flyers she faced in improving to 8-0. The Redbirds led 7-0 after the opening inning and continued their assault on East St. Louis pitching.
Morgan Butler of AHS was 3-for-3 – all doubles – to lead the attack. The Redbirds led 10-0 after two innings and 12-0 following the third. Alton improved to 24-8 overall and 8-4 in the SWC.
The Birds, riding a nine-game winning streak, are scheduled to play Thursday at Belleville West in another SWC contest.
Marquette Regional -- The host Explorers and Civic Memorial's Eagles advanced to the Marquette Class 1A Girls Regional championship match. It's set for 1 p.m. Saturday at Moore Park, with the winner qualifying for next week's Columbia Sectional.
A strong first half sent the 15-5-1 Explorers past East Alton-Wood River, 7-0 in the first regional semifinal Tuesday at Moore Park. CM's Eagles, now 13-7, scored all of its goals in the second half to defeat Roxana, 5-0, in the second semifinal.
Caroline Hoefert scored twice for Marquette, which led 6-0 at half. Hoefert, a senior headed to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, had 17 goals and 10 assists thus far this season.
Lindsey Fencel of CM punched in three goals to lead the second-half assault on Roxana. Fencel has 33 goals and 17 assists, making her the top scorer among Southwestern Illinois players. Teammate MacKenzie Maberry added two goals.
Saturday's winner is scheduled to play at 7 p.m. Tuesday against the Anna-Jonesboro winner in the Columbia Sectional. Regional winners from Metro East Lutheran and Freeburg also go to the Columbia Sectional and tangle at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
