Courtney Beneke of East Alton-Wood River High made the most of her final at-bat Tuesday.
The sophomore walked with the bases loaded in the eighth inning to give the Oilers a 3-2, nonconference softball win over Marquette Catholic. EA-WR loaded the bases with none out before Beneke walked.
The Oilers, coming off a 10-0 victory Monday against Roxana, improved to 11-13. The Explorers are 6-19.
Victoria Beachum picked up the victory and scored the winning run. She struck out 13, walked two and allowed three hits. Lindsey Wilson absorbed the loss in relief of Megan Wittich. Morgan Wiedman had a hit and drove in a run for the Explorers.
Freshman Haley Shewmake sparked the Oilers by getting three of their six hits. EA-WR is participating in the Alton Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
Alton 7, Collinsville 1 – Strong pitching and timely hitting propelled the Redbirds by Collinsville and a sweep of the Kahoks in Southwestern Conference play.
Morgan Butler allowed one run in 5.1 innings and Jordyn Roady finished up for the victory. Alton is 18-8 overall and 6-4 in the SWC. Collinsville is 14-11 and 1-7.
Roady went 2-for-4 with a two-run double in the fourth. The Redbirds built a 5-0 lead by the second inning and never looked back. They got one run on a double steal and another when Collinsville botched a rundown play.
Georgia Dodson hit two doubles and Katelyn Presley was 2-for-3 with a double. Five of the Redbirds’ 11 hits were doubles.
Thanks to Edwardsville’s 3-1 win over Belleville East, it’s a logjam at the top of the conference. The Tigers, the Lancers, O’Fallon and Belleville West are in the hunt for the league title. Alton is two games behind them.
Litchfield 13, Roxana 2 – Visiting Litchfield scored four times in the fifth and used a five-run sixth to romp past the Shells in South Central Conference competition.
Ashley Meyers was 2-for-3 with a triple and both RBIs for the Shells, now 4-18. The Purple Panthers outhit the Shells, 13-5, and Lexi Law of Litchfield went 4-for-4 with a double and triple.
Southwestern 7, Pana 5 -- Ashlyn Ringhausen had three hits, including a triple, to lead the Piasa Birds to a SCC win. Katie Wooldridge added two hits and Bailee Stahl got the win.
Southwestern, 11-11 overall and 3-2 in the SCC, had defeated league rival Carlinville, 9-8, on Monday. Kelsey Rhoades had two hits, one a home run, while Ringhausen also homered. The Piasa Birds scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to prevail. They tallied seven times in the fourth.
Waterloo 7, Jersey 0 – The Panthers managed only three hits and committed four errors in their Mississippi Valley Conference loss to Waterloo. Macy Thurston was the losing pitcher.
Collinsville 2, Alton 1 – It was another narrow loss for the Redbirds against the Kahoks this season. Collinsville won the first game, 3-2 in Alton, and just like the initial meeting, the Kahoks got the winner in the seventh.
They scored with two outs at Fletcher Field for a sweep of the Birds in SWC action. Zach Mathes walked with the bases loaded for the winning run.
The Redbirds grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth, but the Kahoks tied it in the fourth and then handed tough-luck losing pitcher Bryan Hudson the defeat. Hudson struck out six and gave up four hits. The Birds also made two errors.
Alton is 16-12 overall and 3-7 in the SWC. Collinsville is 13-10 and 6-4.
Roxana 8, Litchfield 5 – The Shells followed Monday’s lopsided nonconference win over rival East Alton-Wood River with a South Central Conference victory against Litchfield.
Roxana, striking for 13 hits, shot ahead 5-1, then had to fend off Litchfield in improving to 11-12.
Chance Foss and Blake Vandiver both had three hits for the winners. Levi Wallace chipped in with two hits and Randy Skiff collected three RBIs.
Nelson Martz fanned 11 and gave up seven hits in a complete-game outing.
Southwestern 12, Pana 10 -- Spencer Heineman doubled and homered and had two RBIs in the Piasa Birds' wild SCC win over Pana. Adam Keene and Blake Lawson contributed three hits each. Eric Beyer, Cody Roberts and Zack Seymour all had two hits and Roberts knocked in a pair of runs.
Keene picked up the win as Southwestern shot to 18-9 overall and 5-1 in the SCC. The Piasa Birds play at Collinsville on Wednesday in a nonconference contest.
Belleville East 7, Alton 2 – The Redbirds fell to Belleville East in an SWC match at Lewis and Clark Community College. Allan Bower and Jackson Scheiter won in singles play for Alton, now 4-2 in conference competition.
The Birds resume SWC action Monday against Belleville West.
