Strong pitching and solid hitting carried Marquette Catholic High to a runaway victory Wednesday.
The Explorers blanked Hillsboro, 10-0, in a five-inning nonconference game at Hopkins Field in Moore Park. Marquette made the most of nine hits and relied on Carter Hayden’s sharp pitching.
Hayden worked all five innings and struck out 10 as he limited the Hiltoppers to two hits. Hayden helped his cause with two hits.
However, it was Austin Siener’s big bat that spurred the Explorers. He collected three hits and seven RBIs. Marquette used a four-run third and four-run fifth to highlight its productive effort.
Roxana 10, Staunton 2 – The big inning worked to the Shells’ favor twice in this South Central Conference win.
Roxana scored four runs in the first inning and used a five-run fourth to steamroll host Staunton. The Shells had 16 hits in all and took advantage of five Staunton errors.
Chance Foss and Logan Reardon both had three hits to lead the winners. Jacob Wood drove in three runs and winning pitcher Nolan Martz had two RBIs.
Martz fanned 12 and allowed five hits in a complete-game effort.
Southwestern 10, Carlinville 6 – Piasa Birds pitcher Spencer Heineman improved to 7-1 as Southwestern outscored the Cavaliers in SCC play.
Southwestern’s Jimmie Naylor drove in three runs, two with a double in the fourth. The Piasa Birds scored three runs in the fourth and added three more in the fifth. A four-run sixth, highlighted by two-run singles from Eric Beyer and Andrew Fry, spurred Southwestern.
Bryce DeSpain hit a three-run home run for the Cavs, now 9-7 and 1-2. He was 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Southwestern is 10-7 and 3-1.
EA-WR 11, Valmeyer 0 – Toria Beachum pitched a two-hitter and struck out 9 over four innings as the Oilers silenced the Pirates. Kaliegh Young worked the final three innings to complete the shutout. Young also had three RBIs.
Courtney Beneke, Heather Martin and Haley Shewmake all had two hits for EA-WR. The Oilers, getting 11 hits in all, led 5-0 after two innings and never looked back.
Southwestern 6, Carlinville 4 – A five-run seventh gave visiting Southwestern a win over Carlinville in SCC action.
Ashlyn Ringhausen was 3-for-4 with a single, double and home run. Katie Wooldridge and Kelsey Rhoads both had two hits and Randi Hopkins belted a home run to back winning pitcher Bailee Stahl.
The Piasa Birds are 4-10 overall and 1-2 in the SCC.
Staunton 10-10, Roxana 3-0 – The Bulldogs erupted for four runs in the sixth and seventh inning in their first-game SCC win at Roxana. The Bulldogs then limited the Shells to four hits in the second game.
Roxana’s Ashley Meyers and Shelby Jackson each had two hits in the opener. Jackson doubled and had two RBIs.
Alton Tournament – Host Alton defeated Orchard Farm, 2-0, and Marquette Catholic beat Waterloo, 3-0, in tournament play at Moore Park. The Explorers are 2-0 in the tourney. The Redbirds and Waterloo are 1-1. Orchard Farm is 0-2.
Annie Evans and Sydney Mossman scored for the Redbirds. Caroline Hoefert tallied twice for the Explorers. Kate Sanfilippo got the other goal.
No tourney matches are scheduled tonight. On Friday, it’ll be Waterloo tangling with Orchard Farm at 4:30 and Alton clashing with rival Marquette at 6:15.
