Some extra work didn’t bother the Jersey High Panthers on Wednesday afternoon. They made it pay off in a win.
Jersey scored a 7-6, nine-inning victory at Mascoutah in a key Mississippi Valley Conference contest. The Panthers improved to 18-10 overall and 3-5 in league play.
Mascoutah is 19-4 and 5-1. The Indians were coming off a 10-0 thrashing of Triad on Monday.
Kyle Steckel and Kyle Obertino both had three hits for the winners, who scored three times in the top of the ninth. Mascoutah responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning, but couldn't get the tying run. The game featured 24 hits and 10 errors.
The Panthers, closing in on a 20-win season, play host to Roxana on Thursday in a nonconference game and welcome Granite City on Friday. Jersey is scheduled to resume MVC competition Monday at Highland.
EA-WR 9, Carlinville 6 – The Oilers posted their fourth victory of the season by outscoring the Cavaliers in a wild nonconference game.
The winners shot ahead 8-1 and then had to fend off the Cavs in the second meeting between the two teams this season. Carlinville won the first one.
EA-WR, now 4-23, will play host to Marquette Catholic in a nonconference game at 4:30 Friday. The backyard rivals will play again next Tuesday, also at Norris Dorsey Field in Wood River.
Collinsville 3, Southwestern 0 – Kahoks’ pitcher Tanner Houck slowed down high-scoring Southwestern in a nonconference contest. Houck, a senior right-hander bound for Missouri, yielded one hit and struck out 14.
Spencer Heineman had the lone hit – a double – for the 18-10 Piasa Birds. Collin Baumgartner absorbed the defeat for Southwestern, which entertains Gillespie on Friday in a South Central Conference affair.
Southwestern, Roxana and Greenville are locked in a fight for the league title.
Marquette 9, Roxana 4 – The Explorers improved to 7-19 with a nonconference victory over the Shells. Roxana, losing for the third time this week, is 4-19.
Carlinville 3, EA-WR 2 – Megan Stayton doubled home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth to give the Cavs a nonconference win. The Oilers are 2-1 this week and 11-14 overall. They shaded the Cavs 2-1 earlier this season.
