An explosive fourth inning made the difference as Alton pounded East Alton-Wood River, 12-1, Wednesday in a five-inning, nonconference game.
The visiting Redbirds, improving to 6-4, were tied with the Oilers 1-1 until the fourth. Then Alton scored seven times to break the game open. The Birds added four runs run in the fifth inning to close out the victory.
Kaitlyn Presley’s leadoff home run to deep center field in the fourth inning stirred the Redbirds. They had nine hits in all and took advantage of four errors. Brittany Roady gave up three hits and struck out six in posting her sixth win of the season.
Kaleigh Young absorbed the defeat. Madison Bemis and Kayla Gutierrez had two hits each for Alton.
Litchfield 8, Southwestern 3 – Visiting Litchfield erupted for seven runs in the third inning to defeat Southwestern in a South Central Conference game. The Piasa Birds are 3-5 overall.
Ashlyn Ringhausen, Lindsey Synder and Katie Wooldridge had two hits each for Southwestern. Sophomore Taylor Nixon took the loss. Reliever Bailee Stahl pitched 4.1 innings of hitless, scoreless ball.
Breese Central 9, Roxana 3 – The Cougars made the most of 10 hits in topping Roxana during a nonconference game. Breese Central scored four runs in the third inning, two in the fourth and three in the sixth.
Ashley Meyers was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and RBI for the 1-9 Shells. Andrea Lawson was the losing pitcher.
Roxana 8, Calhoun 3 – Nelson Martz pitched a six-hitter and had two hits himself to guide the Shells by the Warriors in nonconference play.
The Shells banged out a dozen hits and scored six times over the final two innings to secure the victory. Levi Wallace and Randy Skiff also had two hits apiece for the winners. Martz and Wallace both drove in three runs.
Litchfield 4, Southwestern 3 – Litchfield’s Purple Panthers scored the decisive run in the top of the eighth for an SCC victory at Schneider Park.
Five errors hampered the Piasa Birds, now 6-5 overall and 1-1 in the SCC.
Adam Keene had two hits for Southwestern. Jacob Ritzhaupt took the loss. Litchfield is 2-1 in league play.
Greenville 9, Marquette 0 – Tyler Hutchinson fashioned a three-hit shutout and contributed three hits in the Comets’ thumping of the Explorers in a nonconference contest. He struck out 11 and batted in two runs.
Greenville scored all of its runs in the third inning. The Comets had 12 hits in all. Stephen Peuterbaugh was the losing pitcher.
Edwardsville 9, Alton 0 – Defending Southwestern Conference champion and state power Edwardsville blanked the Redbirds at AHS. The Tigers, sixth in last year’s IHSA finals, swept the six singles matches and the three doubles bouts.
The Birds will play host to its Doubles Invitational on Saturday at the AHS courts. Action starts at 8 a.m.
