ALTON BLANKS MATER DEI — The Alton Redbirds continued their solid 2014 campaign with a 3-0 victory over Mater Dei on Saturday in Breese.
The Birds owned a 1-0 lead at the break and tacked on two goals in the second half. Joe Klunk, Brad Leonard and Carl Stradal picked up goals in the win for Alton, while C.J. Nasello and Micah Wrigley dished out assists.
AHS is now 10-5-3. The Redbirds wrap up the regular season at 6:45 p.m. Thursday in Collinsville.
CM, EA-WR AND MARQUETTE COMPETE AT EA-WR INVITE — The Civic Memorial Eagles, East Alton-Wood River Oilers and Marquette Catholic Explorers all participated in the EA-WR Invite with good results Saturday.
CM finished third in the boys' race and seventh in the girls' race. The Oilers were sixth in the boys' race. Collinsville collected 51 points to win the boys' race, while Litchfield nabbed the girls' title with 55 points.
In the girls' race, Alex Singleton of the Eagles ran to third place with a time of 19:08 to lead the way for them. EA-WR and Marquette didn't enter full teams in the girls' race. Natalie Halliday of the Explorers finished in 12th place with a time of 20:49. Haley Kerpan took 14th for the Oilers in 21:13. Red Bud's Keri Burmester won the girls' race in 18:14.
On the boys' side, CM's Sam Hurst (17:04) was seventh and Ryan Gunter (17:05) was eighth to help the Eagles to third place as a team. EA-WR sophomore Garret Fulkerson paced the Oilers with a sixth place finish in 17:00. Brendon Springman (17:28) of EA-WR was 14th and CM's Frank Trost (17:30) was 16th to also finish in the top 20.
Cory Landon of Carlinville won the boys' race in 16:26.
