REDBIRDS WIN ALTON CLASSIC AT WOODLANDS — The Alton Redbirds kept rolling in 2014, winning the Alton Classic on Saturday at Woodlands Golf Course.
The Redbirds carded a 334 as a team to take the top spot in the tourney. O'Fallon was second with a 363, while Edwardsville came in third, carding a 373.
Alton was led by medalist Tori Hays who shot a 3-over 75, while fellow Redbird Natalie Long took second individually with a 5-over 77. Courtney Hachmann also finished in the top five, firing an 85. Ashely Orr was the other AHS linkster to join in on the team scoring with a 97.
Marquette's Carlee Cronin was also a top-10 finisher with an 87.
Alton is back in action at 3:30 p.m. today at Collinsville. The Explorers are also on the links at 4 p.m. today vs. Quincy Notre Dame at Spencer T. Olin Golf Course.
HOLTZ EARNS MEDALIST, BUT EXPLORERS TAKE SECOND IN TOURNEY — Michael Holtz shot a 1-under 71, but it wasn't quite enough as the Marquette Catholic Explorers couldn't overtake Quincy Notre Dame in the All Catholic Tourney at Lockhaven Golf Course.
Marquette carded a 320 on Saturday to take second as QND fired a 311 to win the championship. Althoff was third with a 338.
ALTON FINISHES 19TH AT MATTOON INVITE — The Alton Redbirds fired a 663 over the two-day Mattoon Invite on Friday and Saturday, good for 19th in the 39-team field.
Barrington won the tournament, carding a 583, while Normal was second with a 612 and Edwardsville finished third with a 622.
Alton was led by Alex Rubin and Nick Jamison with 157s. Rubin shot a 76 on the first day and an 81 on the second day, while Jamison carded an 83 and a 74 over the two days.
Other golfers to compete for the Redbirds were: Sam Ballard (177), Max Hunter (185), Phyllip DeLoach (185) and Andrew Campbell (196).
ALTON STYMIES CM — The Alton Redbirds blanked Civic Memorial 3-0 on Saturday at the Bethalto Sports Complex.
Drew Hays blasted a pair of goals and Stephen Nguyen scored the other as AHS cruised by the Eagles. Brett Baldridge, Skylar Funk and Carl Stradal all picked up assists in the win. Shane Bollini was award the shutout in goal.
The Redbirds now enter the McCluer Tournament today, while CM in in Mississippi Valley Conference action at 5:30 p.m. today, playing host to Triad.
MARQUETTE CAN'T DECIPHER BELLEVILLE WEST — The Belleville West Maroons befuddled the Marquette Catholic Explorers on Saturday in Belleville.
West blanked the Explorers 4-0 to drop them to 2-6-1 on the season. Brandon Sanfilippo took the loss in goal, despite making 10 saves.
Marquette gets back on the pitch at 4:30 p.m. today, welcoming Granite City to Gordon Moore Park.
