EAGLES FLY BY EXPLORERS — The Civic Memorial Eagles flew out to a 17-0 start against the Marquette Explorers on the road Saturday and never looked back.
CM led 36-16 at the half and ultimately defeated the Explorers 65-31 on the road to improve to 8-3 on the season.
In the win, the Eagles received 16 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals to lead the charge. Katelyn Turbyfill chipped in 15 points and six rebounds and Journey Coffman netted 13 points for good measure. Altogether eight CM players contributed offensively in the win.
For Marquette, Andria Pace led with nine points, while sister Brittany Pace added eight points. They directed a contingency of seven Explorers who scored in the loss.
Both squads now sit idle until their respective holiday tournaments. The Eagles will head to the Jerseyville Holiday Tournament starting Friday, while Marquette travels to the Lebanon Holiday Tourney, also on Friday.
ROXANA NABS GIBAULT CONSOLATION TITLE — Maddy Sheraka did her best to help lead the Roxana Shells to the consolation championship of the Candy Cane Classic at Gibault High School on Saturday.
The senior scorer, fresh off joining the 1,000 point club, erupted for 35 points as the Shells slipped by Red Bud 50-43 in overtime to win consolation gold.
Roxana found itself in a 9-3 hole after one quarter, but rebounded to hold a slight 16-15 lead at the break. Red Bud charged back in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Shells 18-7 to knot it at 39-39 at the end of regulation. Roxana then pulled away in OT, outscoring the Musketeers 11-4 to secure the victory.
The Shells improved to 6-6 with the win.
Joining Sheraka on the scoring front was Erica Sheets with 11 points.
Roxana will have time to enjoy its consolation bracket title, because it won't participate in a holiday tournament. The Shells don't return to action until 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 5 at Civic Memorial.
