CM WINS AT PINCKNEYVILLE SHOOTOUT — Civic Memorial's 6-foot-8 senior Jakob Lowrance had a monster game as the Eagles bested Cairo 71-60 at the Pinckneyville Shootout on Saturday.
The win elevated CM to 14-8 on the season. After trailing 18-14 at the end of the first quarter, 31-29 at the half and 52-49 after three, the Eagles erupted to outscore the Pilots 22-8 and steal the victory.
Lowrance posted 34 points and 15 rebounds to direct CM to victory. He shot 12 of 13 from the field and 9 of 11 at the free throw line in the win. It was the third time in the last four games Lowrance has scored more than 30 points.
Freshman Jaquan Adams joined him in double figures with 11, while David Lane chipped in with nine points and seven rebounds.
Next up for the Eagles is a 7:30 p.m. game on Tuesday at home against the Columbia Eagles.
EXPLORERS GET BY TRICO IN PINCKNEYVILLE — The Marquette Catholic Explorers charged past Trico 62-48 on Saturday at the Pinckneyville Shootout.
With the win the Explorers improved to 15-9 on the season. It was the second straight victory for Marquette, righting the ship after a five-game skid at the Jersey Tournament.
The Explorers sit idle this week. They return to the court at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 10, playing host to the Highland Bulldogs of the Mississippi Valley Conference, a team they may see later in the Class 3A Jersey Regional.
MARQUETTE FINISHES SIXTH IN CARROLLTON — After defeating Brussels on Friday to advance to the fifth-place game of the Carrollton Hawks Invitational, the Marquette Catholic Explorers came up short in a 42-25 loss to the host Hawks on Saturday.
With the loss Marquette finished 2-2 in the tournament to finish in sixth place. Carrollton was fifth, while North Greene was fourth, West Central was third, Civic Memorial finished second and Calhoun was the tournament champion. Metro East Lutheran won the consolation bracket with a 40-35 win over Jacksonville Routt.
The Explorers return to action at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, welcoming Mater Dei to MCHS in their regular season finale.
Marquette delves into the Class 2A Carlyle Regional at 6 p.m. Feb. 9 against host Carlyle as the No. 5 seed. The Indians are the No. 4 seed. No. 3 seeded Roxana faces No. 6 seed East Alton-Wood River in the second game that night at 7:30 p.m.
CM FINISHES TIED FOR SECOND AT MVC TOURNEY — The Civic Memorial Eagles closed out the regular season on Saturday at the Mississippi Valley Conference Tournament going 3-2 in a tie for second.
Triad won the meet with a flawless 5-0 record. CM went 3-2 to match Waterloo, while Highland and Jersey were 2-3 and Mascoutah was 0-5.
Drake Boverie earned a conference championship at 132 pounds with a 5-0 mark on Saturday. Brayton Williams (152), Brandon Carpenter (182) and Jordan Stagner all finished runner-up in their divisions.
The Eagles will now prepare for the Waterloo Regional on Saturday, joining Cahokia, East St. Louis, Highland, Jersey, Mascoutah, Quincy Notre Dame, Triad and host Waterloo.
