BOYS' CROSS COUNTRY
EA-WR ADVANCES AS A TEAM — The East Alton-Wood River Oiler boys' cross country saw their season continue on Saturday.
The Oilers tied for third in the Class 1A Freeburg Regional, qualifying for the Metro East Lutheran Sectional at 10:45 a.m. on Nov. 1.
EA-WR compiled 116 points to tie for third place with New Athens. Freeburg was the champion with 23 points, while Columbia was second with 101. Dupo, Lebanon and Breese Central also advanced.
Sophomore Garrett Fulkerson led the Oilers with a fourth place finish in 17:03. Other EA-WR runners to compete were: freshman Matthew Shea (11th, 18:01), sophomore Brendan Springman (15th, 18:20), sophomore Zac Lafferty (38th, 19:57), freshman Jacob Mustain (48th, 21:07), freshman Chase Wallendorf (49th, 21:09) and freshman Dustin Hearring (50th, 21:17).
Roxana sophomore James Henseler qualified individually (25th, 19:04). He was the lone Shell to advance. They finished eighth as a team with 164 points, five points behind Central, the final team to qualify.
Freeburg's Jonathan Krause was the individual winner in 16:42.
At the Class 2A Jacksonville Regional, the Civic Memorial Eagles were unable to get out as a team.
Three Eagles advanced as individuals as Sam Hurst (25th, 16:43), Frank Trost (33rd, 17:06) and Ryan Gunter (34th, 17:09) qualified for the Decatur (MacArthur) Sectional on Nov. 1.
Springfield was champion of the regional with 31 points. Springfield's Heath Warren was the individual champion with a time of 15:07.
At the Class 3A Belleville West Regional, the Alton Redbirds were able to qualify three sophomores for the Quincy Sectional at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Arie Macias (11th, 16:26), Evan Rathgeb (13th, 16:31) and Sam Gentelin (33rd, 17:39) all qualified for the Redbirds, who finished in seventh place as a team, missing advancing as a team by three points.
O'Fallon won the regional title, while Wes Schoenthal of Edwardsville won the race with a time of 15:23.
GIRLS' CROSS COUNTRY
ROXANA NABS THIRD TO ADVANCE — The Roxana Shells and East Alton-Wood River girls' cross country squads kept their season alive on Saturday.
The Shells compiled 109 points to finish third at the Class 1A Freeburg Regional. Kryston Scifres led the charge, finishing sixth in 20:48. The rest of the Roxana squad rounded out with: Shalyn Edwards (18th, 22:13), Marissa Thomas (20th, 22:53), Peyton Young (28th, 23:42), Savanah Stogsdill (40th, 25:21) and Emily Davis (62nd, 36:46). The Shells will now compete at the Metro East Lutheran Sectional at 10 a.m. Nov. 1 at SIUE.
EA-WR grabbed seventh with 178 points to be the last team to qualify for the sectional. The Oilers were guided by Haley Kerpan who finished seventh in 21:04. Others to compete were: Carissa Gilreath (29th, 23:51), Kayla Hamilton (31st, 24:06), Kaylee Dailey (51st, 27:04) and Kyara Price (60th, 31:17).
Marquette Catholic junior Natalie Halliday qualified individually for the Explorers, finishing sixth in 20:37.
Freeburg won the team title with 25 team points, while Emily Marler of the Midgets won the race in a time of 19:32.
Other teams to advance were: Belleville Althoff, New Athens, Dupo and Columbia.
At the Class 2A Jacksonville Regional, the Civic Memorial Eagles were unable to advance as a team, but did qualify junior Alex Singleton.
Singleton finished ninth in 18:58 to advance to the Decatur (MacArthur) Sectional on Nov. 1.
Chatham Glenwood won the regional with 39 points, while Jacksonville's Emma Chelsvig was the individual champ in 17:46.
At the Class 3A Belleville West Regional, Alton propelled two runners through to the Quincy Sectional at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 1.
Rebecca Adney finished 23rd in 20:43, while Hanah Batchelor ran to 37th in 22:17.
O'Fallon won the team championship with 24 points, while Angela Buch of the Panthers was the individual champ with a time of 18:45.
CM GOES 1-4 AT QND TOURNAMENT — The Civic Memorial Eagles wrapped up their regular season at the Quincy Notre Dame Tournament on Friday and Saturday, finishing 1-4.
The Eagles closed the regular season with a 6-26 record and will now play host to the Class 3A CM Regional beginning tonight. No. 4 seeded CM battles No. 5 Hillsboro at 6 p.m.
Other teams in the regional are: No. 1 seeded Greenville, No. 2 Jersey and No. 3 Roxana.
At the QND Tournament, the Eagles lost 25-13, 25-13 to Decatur St. Teresa and 25-17, 21-25, 15-5 to Payson-Seymore on Friday in pool play. On Saturday, they bested Jacksonville Routt 25-19, 25-15 before losing to Camp Point Central 25-14, 20-25, 15-8 and Liberty 25-11, 25-15.
Baleigh Gehrs led the weekend with 12 kills, while Kaity Kappler and Saige Gehrs chipped in with 11 apiece. Kennedy Carnes paced the Eagles with seven solo blocks, Susan Buchanan had six solo and four assisted blocks and Sydney Marshall racked up five solo and two assisted blocks. Julie Bruns led with 37 digs, Annika Ochs had 25 service points, Carnes had 24 service points and Monica Ledesma led with 29 assists, while Marshall dished out 17 assists.
