EXPLORERS GET BIG WIN – Marquette Catholic proved resourceful in its 4-2 win Saturday over Calhoun in Hardin.
The 7-3 Explorers scored three unearned runs in the sixth inning to erase a 2-1 deficit and defeat Calhoun ace Grace Baalman.
All four of Marquette’s runs were unearned against Baalman, who gave up four hits and struck out 17. The Explorers took advantage of three Calhoun errors. The Warriors fell to 8-2
Winning pitcher Megan Schorman also allowed four hits and fanned 13 in notching the win. Tess Eberlin doubled to stir Marquette’s attack. Grace Frost, Kalie Buecker and Schorman added singles. Buecker delivered a two-run single in that big sixth inning.
Baalman belted a solo home run for Calhoun, while teammate Becca Oswald supplied a run-scoring double. The Warriors and Explorers are scheduled to tangle again – at 4:30 p.m. Thursday on Diamond No. 3 in Moore Park.
SHELLS ENJOY SWEEP – Roxana downed Granite City, 4-3 and 9-8, and the Shells improved their record to 4-6. The Warriors dropped to 0-10. Roxana, which has won four of its last five games after and 0-5 start, is slated to entertain Waterloo Gibault on Monday.
Granite City has a Monday date at East Alton-Wood River.
OILERS FALL – Host Freeburg had the bats rattling as the Midgets twice routed EA-WR, 15-0 and 15-2.
The 3-10 Oilers are scheduled to resume nonconference competition Monday at Jersey. They play host to Civic Memorial at 4:15 p.m. Thursday.
MARQUETTE BLANKS MATER DEI — Two first-half goals led the Marquette Catholic Explorers past Mater Dei 2-0 on Saturday at Gordon Moore Park.
The Explorers improved to 4-1-1 with the victory.
Kate Sanfilippo and Lauren Schmickley took care of the scoring for Marquette, while Annabelle Copeland and Bailey Hartrich picked up assists. Sonorah Eldred and Lauren Fischer split time in goal to secure the shutout.
The Explorers return to action at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, playing host to Edwardsville.
EA-WR BREEZES BY NORTH MAC — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers closed out the EA-WR girls' soccer tournament in style on Saturday.
With Roxana already beating Mascoutah 2-0 on Saturday to determine the championship, the Oilers concluded the round robin tourney with an 8-2 win over North Mac. EA-WR improved to 2-4 on the young season with the win.
The Oilers tallied five first-half goals to take a 5-0 lead at the break and then tacked on three more in the second half.
Shannon Inman led the way with two goals and two assists in the win. Chrissy Long and Lauren Reynolds also scored two goals apiece in EA-WR's triumph. Brittany Grayson and Madison Shewmake each had a goal and an assist and Brittany Yenne logged an assist for the Oilers in the win, too.
EA-WR plays host to Beardstown at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday and then heads to North Mac for a 5 p.m. Wednesday contest.
Friday’s annual Alton Relays on Wigger Track at Public School Stadium were rained out. They won’t be rescheduled this spring.
The guys are set to run Friday in the Belleville West Invitational. The Maroons welcome their rescheduled girls invite Monday. Alton’s girls also will compete Friday in the Jersey Relays.
