MARQUETTE SPLITS TWO ON SATURDAY — The Marquette Catholic Explorers lost 2-1 to Biggsville West Central and then walloped Pittsfield 13-1 in two games on Saturday played at Quincy University.
With the split the Explorers are now 21-8 on the season.
It took eight innings to decide the battle between Biggsville and Marquette. Biggsville led 1-0 after three, but the Explorers tied it in the fourth and then watched as the Heat plated one in the bottom of the eighth to pull off the win.
Freshman Meghan Schorman pitched a gem in the loss, going 7.1 innings while only surrendering one hit, striking out 14 and walking one. Both runs scored by Biggsville against Schorman were unearned.
Offensivley, Marquette banged out five hits led by Megan Wittich, who had two including a double. Kalie Buecker had the lone RBI for the Explorers.
Marquette had an easier road in Game 2 against Pittsfield, which only went four innings.
The Explorers exploded for 13 runs on 12 hits in that game. They erased a 1-0 deficit with three-run second inning, scored one in the third and poured on nine in the fourth.
Wittich got the call in the circle this time, fanning four, walking none and scattering three hits while allowing one run in four innings of work.
Schorman paced the bats with a 2 for 4 day at the dish that included a triple and four RBIs. Wittich was 3 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBIs in the win, too. Carly Schaber and Tess Eberlin tacked on two RBIs apiece, while Eberlin and Sam Harshbarger also had two hits each.
