ALTON TOPS ST. CHARLES LUTHERAN FOR TOURNEY TITLE — The Alton Redbirds rolled to the tournament title at the McCluer Tournament Friday at Eagan Civic Center fields in Florissant.
The Redbirds topped St. Charles Lutheran 3-1 in the tournament finals, receiving goals from C.J. Nasello, Eric Fehrenbach and Carl Stradal. AHS is now 6-4-1 on the season after the tourney title.
Alton is back in action vs. Gibault at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Gordon Moore Park.
EA-WR LOSES TO JERSEY IN SHOOTOUT — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers dropped a rough game in Jerseyville on Saturday in a shootout.
Jersey won the match 5-3. With the loss, the Oilers sank to 6-3 on the season.
David Barrett tallied a first-half goal to give EA-WR 1-0 lead which held up until the 75th minute when the Oilers were whistled for a hand ball inside the box. It led to a penalty shot for the Panthers, which made good to knot it 1-1.
Two scoreless overtime periods spurred a shootout with Jersey pulling out a 5-3 victory.
EA-WR is back on the field at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Carlyle.
MARQUETTE LOSES TO COLLINSVILLE — Marquette Catholic welcomed Collinsville Friday at Gordon Moore Park for a makeup contest from Aug. 25, but unfortunately came up on the short end of the outcome.
The Explorers were blanked by the Kanoks 3-0 to drop to 4-7-1 on the season.
ALTON KEEPS ROLLING IN RIVER CHALLENGE — The Alton Redbirds kept their high-flying season going on Saturday in the Illinois/Missouri River Challenge at The Orchards Golf Club in Belleville.
Alton carded a 332 to take the top spot for Illinois, finishing second overall to Missouri's MICDS, which fired a 311. Missouri won the river war.
Tori Hays paced the Redbirds with a 77, good for fourth overall individually. Courtney Hachmann (79), Natalie Long (80) and Ashley Orr (96) rounded out the team score for AHS. Hachmann was fifth individually and Long nabbed 10th as an individual.
Next up for the Birds is a triangular at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday with Edwardsville and Granite City at Oak Brook Golf Club in Edwardsville.
ALTON FINISHES SEVENTH IN O'FALLON TOURNAMENT — The Alton Redbirds competed in the O'Fallon Panther Classic on Saturday and shot to seventh place in the 15-team tournament.
Alton fired a 325 as a team to get seventh. Belleville Althoff was champion of the tourney, carding a 308.
Alex Rubin was tops for the Redbirds and second overall individually in the tournament, shooting a 72. Sam Ballard (78), Nick Jamison (89) and Andrew Campbell (90) rounded out the team scoring. Mitch Klug (96) and Ryan Boyd (96) also competed for AHS.
EAGLES GO 2-3 AT GRANITE CITY TOURNEY — The Civic Memorial Eagles competed in the Granite City Tournament on Saturday and ran to a 2-3 mark.
Overall on the season CM is now 4-11. The Eagles defeated host Granite City and East St. Louis of the Southwestern Conference, but logged losses to Southwestern, Red Bud and Mississippi Valley Conference rival Highland.
Alaina Trosley made the all-tournament team, while Saige Gehrs was an offensive standout for the Eagles with 24 kills overall in the five matches.
Gehrs had eight kills in a 25-7, 25-21 win over East Side, which also included 13 straight service points from Kennedy Carnes in Game 1 to get the win. The run included four aces.
CM's other win, 25-5, 25-15 over GCHS, saw Trosley step up with four kills and six digs. Sydney Marshall accumulated 12 service points, three aces and eight assists in the win over the Warriors, too.
The Eagles are back in MVC action at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Triad.
