ROXANA TAKES SECOND IN TOURNEY — The Roxana Shells were able to bring home a second place finish in the Morrisonville Tournament on Saturday.
The Shells bested Greenview in the semifinals 25-21, 25-15 on Saturday, but stumbled against Raymond Lincolnwood in the finals, losing 25-19, 30-28.
Roxana's Bailey McGuire garnered MVP honors in the tournament. The Shells are now 16-9 on the season.
Roxana is back on the court at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Staunton in South Central Conference action.
ALTON COMPETES IN LARGE FIELD AT PEORIA INVITE — The Alton Redbirds' boys' and girls' cross country teams got to see some good competition on Saturday at the Peoria Invite. They also got to run on the future site of the state meet at Peoria's Detweiller Park.
The Alton boys' finished in 44th place as a team. Arie Macias was the top finisher for the Birds, taking 124th with a time of 16:18.17. The rest of the team rounded out with: Evan Rathgeb (17:05.82), Sam Gentelin (17:27.98), Alex Davis (17:34.40) and James Steinman (18:34.06).
Orland Park Sandburg won the team title, compiling 31 team points.
Granite City was the top finishing local team at 25th. The Warriors compiled 711 points and Will O'Keefe was their top finisher in 15:31.94 to take 27th individually.
On the girls' side, Alton finished 47th as a team. Jesse Reiser of McHenry was the top individual in a time of 14:39.49.
Becca Adney led the way in 161st place with a time of 20:16.83. Hanah Batchelor (20:57.82), Haley Haar (22:40.69), Savanah Durr (23:30.21), Abbi Day (23:57.35), Rachel Held (24:46.98) and Anna Scoggins (26:30.80) were the other runners for the Redbirds on Saturday.
Hoffman Estates nabbed the top spot with 77 team points. Peoria Notre Dame's Maryjeanne Gilbert won the race in 16:43.75.
Edwardsville was the highest placing local team, finishing seventh with 232 points. Elizabeth Lynn paced the Tigers with a 21st place finish in 18:21.34.
