ALTON 2, TROY (MO.) 1; ALTON 2, SECKMAN (MO.) 1 — The Alton Redbirds captured the Msgr. Lloyd Sullivan division championship of the CYC/Bob Guelker Tournament by knocking off the Seckman Jaguars 2-1 in the championship game on Saturday.
Logan Clark and C.J. Nasello scored goals for Alton, which finished 4-1 in the tournament and improved to 11-3, surpassing last year’s win total of nine.
The Redbirds advanced to the championship match by beating Troy 2-1 on Friday.
With the win on Saturday, Alton avenged the 2-0 loss to Seckman in pool play on Wednesday.
The Redbirds will travel to Edwardsville at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday to face the Tigers.
EDWARDSVILLE 3, NORMAL 0 — The Tigers remained unbeaten after pulling off a shutout win over the Ironmen on Saturday at EHS.
Michael Picchiotti, Alec Mills and Michael Glisson each scored a goal and Mohammad Hamad had two assists for Edwardsville, which improved to 11-0-2 and will play Alton at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday at home.
GIBAULT 8, METRO-EAST LUTHERAN 0 — The Knights dropped to 6-6-1 with a loss to Gibault on Saturday at home.
MELHS, which was shut out for the third time this season, will play Litchfield at 4:30 today.
CENTRALIA INVITATIONAL — The Granite City Warriors and the Alton Redbirds placed 13th and 15th, respectively, in the 16-team Centralia Invitational on Saturday.
The Warriors shot a 255 and the Redbirds finished with a 263. Host Centralia won the tournament with a 224, beating O’Fallon by a stroke.
The tournament was played under a two-man format.
For Alton, Matt Moore and Dylan Lahue shot an 81 and the teams of Ryan Boyd/Dalton Lahue and Adam Stilts/Tyler Hazelwood each shot a 91.
For Granite City, Drew Wielgus and Riley Brown shot a 77. Grant Beanland — who shot a hole-in-one in last year’s Centralia tournament — and Cameron Rubenacker finished with an 83 and Patrick Dreste and Cole Bartling shot a 95.
ALTON DEF. UNIVERSITY CITY 25-9, 25-12; HOLT DEF. ALTON 25-19, 25-21; FORT ZUMWALT NORTH DEF. ALTON 25-19, 25-6; HOLT 25-23, 25-16; ALTON TIED HAZELWOOD CENTRAL 25-19, 19-25 — The Redbirds finished 1-3-1 in the Ritenour Tournament over the weekend, two of those losses were to Holt.
Alton is now 12-10-1 and will play at Belleville East at 6 p.m. Tuesday in a Southwestern Conference match.
SPRINGFIELD INVITATIONAL — Brothers Andrew and Will O’Keefe finished fourth and fifth, respectively, for the Granite City Warriors in the Springfield Invitational on Saturday
Andrew, a sophomore, ran 16 minutes, six seconds and Will, a senior, ran 16:08. They helped the Warriors place sixth out of 20 teams with 194 points.
Granite City finished 16th with 436 points in the girls' race. Amanda Rivera was the team’s top finisher, placing 85th with a 23:45.
The Warriors will compete in the Triad Invitational at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
FREEBURG INVITATIONAL — Metro-East Lutheran’s Javon Watkins turned in another strong performance on Saturday at the Freeburg Invitational in Smithton Community Park, placing eighth with a time of 16:58 seconds in the boys’ race.
Also in the boys’ race, Roxana’s Brandon Isom came in 16th with a 17:29, EA-WR’s Jake Roustio finished 33rd with an 18:01 and Father McGivney’s Elijan Burns placed 95th with a 20:07. Roxana finished sixth with 210 points, EA-WR was eighth with 293, MELHS placed 14th with 407 points and Father McGivney was 21st with 545 points.
In the girls’ race, Roxana’s Michaela Tarpley finished 28th with a 21:49, EA-WR’s Carissa Gilreath came in 40th with a 22:34, MELHS’ Kate Muravjova was 53rd with a 23:15 and Father McGivney’s Megan Schilly placed 68th with a 24:17. MELHS placed 10th with 258 points.
LAFAYETTE 1, EDWARDSVILLE 0 – The Tigers dropped to 8-3-1 with a home loss to the Lancers on Friday.
Edwardsville plays at Villa Duchesne at 4 p.m. today.
