GIRLS' TRACK AND FIELD
ALTON RACES TO SECOND AT JACKSONVILLE INDOOR INVITE — The Alton Redbirds compiled 76.5 points to finish second out of 21 teams at the Jacksonville Indoor Invite on Saturday.
Dunlap won the event with 102 points. Dunlap is the defending Class 1A state champions. Rounding out the top five were: Springfield (65), Edwardsville (39.5) and Rochester (35).
Alton senior LaJarvia Brown posted a big tournament, setting meet records in the long jump, triple jump and 60-meter high hurdles.
Brown leaped 18-11 in the long jump and 39-6 in the triple jump, while turning in a time of 9.02 seconds in the hurdles. She also teamed with Jeanea Epps, Katie Mans and Daysha Lacey to win the 800-meter relay in 1:48.3.
Jewel Wagner won the shot put with a new school record throw of 41-5 and Chayvon Buckingham took 4th at 38-6.
Katie Mans was second in the high jump at 5-2, while Tyriss Holloway tied the school record in the pole vault at 8-6, good enough for 7th place. Epps took 4th in the 60-meter dash at 8.16 seconds and Lacey took 6th in 8.33 seconds. Epps also took 5th in the 200-meter dash in 27.66 seconds.
The 1,600-meter relay team, comprised of Mans, Cri'Shonna Hickman, Anyria Goner and Epps, took 7th with a time of 4:28.51.
