GIRLS' TRACK AND FIELD
ALTON FIRST AT MICHAEL RODGERS INVITATIONAL — The Alton Redbirds finished first at the Michael Rodgers Invitational at McCluer South-Berkley High in Missouri on Saturday.
Alton compiled 123 points as a team. LaJarvia Brown won the 100-meter high hurdles (14.59), the triple jump (40-8) and the long jump (18-6). Her time in the high hurdles set a new school record. Katie Mans was first in the high jump (5-0) also.
REDBIRDS WIN NIKE BRACKET AT METRO CUP — The Alton Redbirds are 4-0 on the young season after going 3-0 in the Nike Bracket of the Metro Cup and adding a non-conference 2-1 win over Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin on Thursday.
AHS bested Columbia 4-1 in Columbia on Saturday to earn the Nike Bracket title of the Metro Cup. Freshman Alaina Nasello logged two goals in the win over Columbia, while Brianna Hatfield tacked on a goal and three assists to help pace the Birds.
EDWARDSVILLE TAKES THIRD IN METRO CUP ADIDAS BRACKET — The Edwardsville Tigers went 2-1 in the Metro Cup's Adidas Bracket, wrapping it up with a 3-0 win over Waterloo for third place in the tournament's top bracket.
Ashlin West, Paitlyn Schneider and Erzi Beckmann scored goals for EHS in the win.
MARQUETTE GOES WINLESS IN METRO CUP ADIDAS BRACKET — The Marquette Catholic Explorers went 0-3 in the Metro Cup's Adidas Bracket.
The Explorers wrapped up their tournament with a 2-1 loss to O'Fallon on Friday at the District 7 Sports Complex in Edwardsville.
Bailey Hartrich scored the lone goal for Marquette. Annabelle Copeland had the assist.
CM SPLITS TWO GAMES SATURDAY — The Civic Memorial Eagles defeated Carlinville 2-0 on Saturday, but then lost 6-3 to Pleasant Plains in the title tilt of the Carlinville Tournament at Blackburn College.
CM is 2-1-1 on the season. The Eagles got goals from Cassie Hall and Morgan Wilson in the win over the Cavs, while Wilson scored twice and Alexis Enke scored once in the loss to Pleasant Plains.
GRANITE LOSES TO NAPERVILLE CENTRAL — Granite City drops season opener to Naperville Central at Belleville West on Saturday, 5-1.
Payton Reeves had the only goal for the Warriors, unassisted.
ALTON OPENS SEASON ON THE ROAD — The Alton Redbirds opened the season on Friday with a 15-0 win over Herrin on the road and then split two games with Murphysboro on Saturday at Rent One Ballpark in Marion.
The Birds fell 9-6 to Murphysboro and nabbed a 15-1 victory in Game 2 of the doubleheader.
Nick Cauley got the win and Jacob Kanallakan had two hits and two RBIs to pace the Redbirds against Herrin.
Steven Pattan took the loss on the hill in Game 1 Saturday vs. Murphysboro. Derrick Allen logged two hits in the loss to lead the offense.
In Game 2, Sam Ballard got the pitching win, while Allen had three hits and two RBIs, Mike Hampton had two hits and four RBIs and Pattan knocked out two hits and three RBIs.
MELHS SWEEPS CALHOUN — The Metro East Lutheran Knights swept Calhoun on Saturday in a doubleheader, 11-10 and 2-1.
Mikey Coulson and Paul Kubicek got the wins on the mound for MELHS. Eli Jacobs smacked two home runs and had six RBIs in Game 1, while Kubicek hit a homer in Game 2.
ROXANA DROPS TWO GAMES SATURDAY — The Roxana Shells lost 10-0 to Jersey and 10-8 to Gibault in a pair of games Saturday.
Blake Vandiver had three hits and Tanner Davis drove in three in the loss to Gibault.
The Shells are 0-3 on the season.
GILLESPIE TOSSES ONE-HITTER IN WIN OVER MARQUETTE — The Marquette Catholic Explorers fell 8-1 to the Gillespie Miners on Saturday behind a one-hitter from Addison Bryant at Gordon Moore Park.
Marquette's Emma Taylor had the lone hit and RBI.
GRANITE CITY PLAYS THREE AT NORTH MAC TOURNEY — The Granite City Warriors played three games Saturday at the North Mac Tournament.
GCHS bested Springfield Lanphier 12-1 and Carlinville 7-2 before falling to host North Mac 9-0.
The Warriors are now 2-2 on the season.
ROXANA LOSES TWO TO MASCOUTAH — Roxana lost 6-2 and 14-5 to Mascoutah in a doubleheader on Saturday to dip to 0-2 on the season.
Hannah Rexford and Pheobe Booher suffered the losses in the circle. Abby Palen had two hits and an RBI in Game 1 and two hits and three RBIs in Game 2 to pace the offense for the Shells.
