ALTON'S BROWN EXCELS AT PRIN — LaJarvia Brown, a senior at Alton High, started her track season on a high note in the Principia Indoor Invitational at Elsah on Saturday. Triad played host to the multi-school event.
Brown, the two-time Class 3A IHSA champion in the girls' triple jump, won that event by going 40 feet, 7.5 inches at Prin. She also won the 60-meter high hurdles in 9.11 seconds. Brown also joined Katie Mans, Kimbreon Knight and Raina Valyo on the 4x200-meter relay team, second in 1:52.49.

Mans, second in the high jump at 5-0 and Jeanea Epps, runner-up in the 60-meters at 8.05 seconds, also excelled. The Redbirds placed second in the 4x200-meter varsity relay, the 4x400-meter varsity relay, the 4x800-meter frosh-soph relay and the 4x200-meter frosh-soph relay.
"The girls did an outstanding job," coach Terry Mitchell said.
The Redbirds are scheduled to participate in the Jacksonville Indoor Invite on March 4. The Jersey Indoor Invite follows on March 12 before Alton opens its outdoor season on March 19 in the Michael Rodgers Invite at McCluer South High in Berkeley, Mo. The Birds have slated a quadrangular meet for their new track at AHS at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23. The Southwestern Illinois Relays then play out March 26 at Edwardsville High.
