ALTON, GRANITE CITY COMPETE AT ABE LINCOLN INVITE — Alton's Ashley Heistand and Eryka Graham enjoyed a great weekend at the 8th Annual Abe Lincoln Invite in Springfield.
Heistand was the girls' champion with a 215.5 average for the invitational, finishing with 1,293 pins. Graham slid in right behind her in second place, accumulating 1,284 pins to accompany a 214 average in the tourney.
AHS teammate Elizabeth Hanke finished in the top 10 also, with a 9th place finish. She averaged 193.3 pins and knocked down a total of 1,160.
The Redbird boys' and girls' and the Granite City boys' and girls' all competed in the invite. There were 14 teams on the girls' side and 12 on the boys' side.
Behind Heistand and Graham, the AHS girls finished in third place as a team, 133 pins behind champion Collinsville and just 13 behind runner-up O'Fallon. The individual average for the Birds was 186.6.
As for the Alton boys' squad, they finished in sixth place, led by Tyler Stevenson with a 19th place finish overall. Stevenson compiled 1,233 pins altogether and produced a 205.5 average. Alton had a 192.33 individual average as a team.
The Granite City boys' team was 10th with a 183.63 individual average, while the GCHS girls' unit placed 13th with a 139.20 individual average.
Justin Simpson paced the Warrior boys with a 17th place finish. He totaled 1,257 pins and a 209.5 average.
For the Granite City girls, it was Ashley Heiman leading the way with a 27th place finish and an average of 166.7. She knocked down 1,000 pins.
ROXANA GETS BIG WIN OVER CARROLLTON FRIDAY — The Roxana Shells welcomed the Carrollton Hawks to Milazzo Gymnasium on Friday and came away with a 56-48 non-conference win.
The Shells improved to 5-1 with the victory on the season.
They led 32-25 at the half and 42-33 through three quarters and staved off the Hawks for the win.
Senior Trace Gentry paced the offense with 17 points, while Chance Foss and Cody McMillen joined him in double figures with 14 and 11 points respectively. Gentry was 3 of 4 from 3-point range in the triumph.
Next up for Roxana is a 7:30 p.m. matchup with rival East Alton-Wood River at Memorial Gym in Wood River.
EA-WR FALLS TO CARLINVILLE — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers stumbled in Carlinville on Friday, losing to the Cavaliers 52-49.
The Oilers dipped to 2-4 with the loss. They trailed 31-23 at halftime, but outscored the Cavs 26-21 in the second half. It just wasn't quite enough to escape with a win.
EA-WR's Blake Marks led all scorers with 25 points in the loss. Carlinville was guided by 23 points from Brady Jamieson.
The Oilers return to action at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in another non-conference affair at Staunton. They welcome rival Roxana to Memorial Gym at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
GCHS ENJOYS FIRST WIN OF SEASON FRIDAY — The Granite City Warriors enjoyed their first win of the year on Friday, closing the Orchard Farm Tournament with a 47-18 victory over the host Eagles.
The Warriors are now 1-2 as they prepare to delve into Southwestern Conference play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Belleville West.
GCHS dominated the Eagles, nabbing a 14-2 lead after one quarter and comfortably ahead 26-10 at halftime. The Warriors then outscored Orchard Farm 21-8 in the second half.
Addaya Moore highlighted the offense with a game-high 17 points to go with 12 rebounds. Donyai Garrett joined Moore in double figures with 10 points. Moore also grabbed 11 rebounds and had a game-high 3 assists.
ALTON WINS THREE AT MORTON QUAD — The Alton Redbirds swept the field at the Morton Quadrangular Meet on Saturday.
Alton bested Bloomington 44-33, Morton 46-24 and Peoria Richwoods 68-3. The Redbirds are now 5-1 on the season.
With the trio of wins Saturday, AHS head coach Eric Roberson moved 7 wins away of 300 for his career.
The Redbirds head to Granite City at 6 p.m. Thursday to take on the host Warriors and Civic Memorial in a triangular.
GRANITE CITY SPLITS AT WASHINGTON DUALS — The Granite City Warriors competed at the Washington Duals on Saturday, splitting on the day.
The Warriors defeated Lincoln Way Central 39-32, but fell to the No. 1 ranked 2A squad in the state, Washington, 37-27.
GCHS welcomes Alton and Civic Memorial at 6 p.m. Thursday for a triangular.
