ALTON COMES FROM BEHIND TO BEAT JERSEY — The Alton Redbirds erased a 5-0 deficit to beat the Jersey Panthers in Jerseyville on Saturday, 7-5.
AHS improved to 5-0 on the season, while the Panthers slipped to 3-1.
Jersey grabbed a 5-0 lead, scoring all of its runs in the second inning, but Alton tied it in the fifth before scoring single runs in the sixth and seventh.
Sydney Hartman had three hits and two RBIs, while Savannah Fisher picked up two hits and a RBI to pace the hitters. Brittany Roady got the win in the circle, fanning seven, walking two, scattering seven hits and allowing no earned runs.
On Friday the Birds walloped Lebanon 19-0 in five innings at AHS. Miranda Hudson homered and drove in four in the win, while Bronte Fencel went 4-for-4 with six RBIs to lead the way. Roady garnered the win. Hartman and Fisher each worked an inning of scoreless relief.
EDWARDSVILLE SPLITS WITH MATER DEI — The Edwardsville Tigers traveled to Breese and split a doubleheader with the Mater Dei Knights on Saturday, winning 10-0 in five innings and then losing 4-2 in the second game.
EHS is now 3-2.
Jordan Garella struck out five in five innings while walking no one, hitting a batter and scattering two hits to earn the win in the first game.
Allison Loehr ripped a homer and picked up three RBIs, while Sarah Hangsleben was 3-for-3 with a double to stir the Edwardsville offense in Game 1.
In Game 2, the Tigers clawed back from a 4-0 deficit with two runs in the fifth inning, but couldn't come all the way back.
Jennifer Kocevar suffered the loss in the circle for EHS. Jordyn Henricks pitched in relief for Edwardsville.
Jordan Corby and Hayli Green each had two hits to direct the offense in the losing effort.
ROXANA GETS SCC WIN OVER PANA — The Roxana Shells played host to Pana in South Central Conference action Saturday, winning 7-1.
Roxana is 2-4 and 1-1 following the win.
Hannah Rexford pocketed the win, striking out nine, walking two and surrendering two hits in six innings.
Rexford also led the offense with a triple and three RBIs. Rexford was one of three Shells to log two hits in the win, joining: Alexis Counts and Lindsey Scroggins.
TRIAD ROMPS EA-WR ON FRIDAY — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers got short gamed 14-0 in five innings by the Triad Knights on the road Friday.
With the loss, the Oilers sank to 2-4 on the season, while Triad is now 4-1.
Haley Shewmake and Carly Campbell picked up EA-WR's two hits in the game.
ALTON TOPS SPRINGFIELD AT AHS — The Alton Redbirds remained undefeated, besting visiting Springfield 3-2 on Saturday at Piasa Motor Fuels Field at AHS.
Alton improved to 6-0-1 on the season.
Katie Kercher and Brianna Hatfield scored to give AHS a 2-1 lead at the break, while Annie Evans expanded it to 3-1 before a late goal by Springfield. Hatfield — who recently gave a verbal commitment to Florida Gulf Coast — logged two assists for the Redbirds in the win, too.
Julia May Campbell earned the win in goal, making eight saves.
ROXANA GARNERS FIRST WIN — The Roxana Shells picked up a 12-5 win over Pana on Saturday for their first win of the season.
Roxana is now 1-5 and 1-0 in the South Central Conference.
After trailing 1-0 after a half inning, the Shells responded with one in the first to tie it 1-1 and then five in the second and three in the third to build a commanding 9-1 lead.
Tanner Davis worked four innings to earn the win on the hill. Davis also had three hits and three RBIs, while Chance Foss added two hits and four RBIs to help pace the offense in the win.
On Friday, Roxana ran into a buzz saw in defending Class 3A state champion Highland on the road, losing 9-1.
Zach Golenor and Blake Vandiver each had two hits in the loss to the Bulldogs.
E'VILLE CLOSES TOURNAMENT WITH WIN — After suffering a 2-1 loss to Merritt Island (Fla.) on Friday in the semifinals of the Rawlings Select Classic No. 2 Tournament in Georgia, the Edwardsville Tigers rebounded to beat Enterprise (Ala.) 8-7 in their final game of the tourney.
EHS returns home with a 6-1 overall record, going 3-1 in Georgia.
Against Enterprise the Tigers fell behind 7-5 after four innings, but scratched across three runs in the top of the seventh to get the victory.
Jake Garella, Cole Hansel and Joel Quirin each had two hits in the win. Hansel had a team-best three RBIs.
In the game with Merritt Island, Trey Riley threw six innings, fanning three, walking none and scattering four hits to absorb the loss on the mound.
Edwardsville accumulated four hits in the loss from Riley, Garella, Quirin and Tyler Stamer, while Mark Smith had the lone RBI in the seventh inning.
EXPLORERS SPLIT WITH CALHOUN — The Marquette Catholic Explorers split a doubleheader with Calhoun on Saturday at Lloyd Hopkins Field, winning the first game 12-2 in six innings and dropping the second 6-2.
Marquette sits at 3-4 on the young season.
Brady McAfee was the winner on the mound, fanning 10 and walking 5 in 5.0 innings of work. Jayce Maag and Konnor Morrissey each contributed three hits to spark the offense. Morrissey, Zach Weinman and Liam Maher all had two RBIs to lead the Explorers.
In Game 2, Marquette led 2-0 after two innings, but fell behind 6-2 entering the bottom of the seventh when it was able to scratch two runs across, but were unable to complete the comeback.
Jacob File and Kevin Lloyd each had two assists in the loss to highlight the hitting attack.
GRANITE CITY DROPS TWO AT HOME TO WASHINGTON — The Granite City Warriors were swept by visiting Washington, 8-2 and 8-5, on Saturday at Babe Champion Field in Granite City.
GCHS is now 1-4 after the two losses.
In the first game, Jamie Roustio took the loss on the hill, while Latrell Smith steered the offense with two of the Warriors' five hits.
In Game 2, James Marler absorbed the pitching loss, while Austin Bonvicino and B.J. Niesporek both had two hits to guide the bats. Niesporek had a double and a RBI.
EA-WR SWEPT BY BREESE CENTRAL — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers dipped to 2-4 on the season after being swept in a doubleheader by Breese Central on Saturday in Wood River.
Central topped the Oilers 14-4 and 11-0 to improve to 6-1 on the young season.
MARQUETTE TAKES DOWN ALTHOFF AND QND — The Marquette Catholic Explorers played host to Belleville Althoff and Quincy Notre Dame Saturday, posting a pair of wins.
The Explorers topped Althoff 7-2 and QND 6-2.
Nick Berkenbile, Danie McCluskey, Joe Segneri and Nick McCune all picked up a pair of wins in singles. McCluskey and Nathan Walters teamed up for two wins in doubles on the day, too.
EDWARDSVILLE ROMPS CARBONDALE ON FRIDAY — The Edwardsville Tigers welcomed Carbondale to the EHS Tennis Center on Friday and came away with 12-1 win over the Terriers.
Edwardsville won seven of eight singles flights and all five doubles flights on Saturday.
The Tigers are 4-1 overall on the season following the win.
Zach Trimpe, Alex Gray, Luke Motley, Seth Lipe, Ben Bequette, Dan Thomas and Logan Pursell all earned singles victories. In doubles, Lipe and Motley, Thomas and Pursell, Trimpe and Gray, Bequette and Erik Weiler all combined for victories. Thomas and Pursell won at No. 4 and No. 5 doubles.
