MARKS POURS IN 30 IN LOSS TO GILLESPIE — Blake Marks logged a big offensive performance Saturday, but it wasn't enough as the East Alton-Wood River Oilers fell 75-50 to the Gillespie Miners to open the Carlinville Holiday Tournament.
The loss dropped the Oilers to 4-6 on the young season, while Gillespie elevated to 6-3.
EA-WR hung tight early, seeing the affair knotted at 20-20 after one quarter. The Miners jumped in front 41-29 at the break with a solid second quarter and then raced ahead 67-40 after three quarters.
Marks paced all scorers with 30 points, but it was to no avail. Luke Wells was the second leading scorer for the Oilers with 6 points.
Nick and Evan Price led Gillespie with 24 and 15 points respectively.
EA-WR continues pool play at 3:30 p.m. today, facing Bunker Hill at Carlinville High School.
EA-WR SUFFERS LOPSIDED LOSS TO MINERS — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers couldn't decipher to Gillespie Miners' attack on Saturday, falling 62-12 to open the Carlinville Holiday Tournament.
The Oilers plummeted to 2-12 on the season with the loss. Gillespie is now 8-3.
The Miners owned a 36-10 lead at halftime and never looked back.
Courtney Beneke and Anna Stangle led the EA-WR offense with four points apiece.
The Oilers return to the court at 2 p.m. today at the Carlinville Middle School, battling Bunker Hill in pool play. The Minutemaids are also 0-1 in Carlinville after losing 70-16 to Nokomis on Saturday.
BASKETBALL AND WRESTLING TEAMS IN ACTION — Starting with the Alton Redbirds, the boys' basketball team opened the Centralia Holiday Tournament at 8:30 this morning with Raleigh Egypt of Memphis, Tenn.
The Alton wrestling team, along with the Granite City Warriors, opened the William “Red” Schmitt Holiday Tournament in Granite City this morning also.
Other games today include: Civic Memorial girls' basketball vs. Jersey at 3 p.m. and Granite City at 7:30 p.m. in Jerseyville, CM boys' hoops vs. Lebanon at 4 p.m. and the Marquette boys against Lovejoy at 5:30 p.m., both in Columbia and the Alton girls vs. Jefferson City at 4 p.m. in Jefferson City, Mo.
The Roxana boys' and girls' squads are also in action. The Roxana boys battle Red Bud and 2:30 p.m. and host Pinckneyville at 7:30 p.m. in the Duster Thomas Hoops Classic in Pinckneyville, while the lady Shells face Ramsey at 1 p.m. and Springfield Lutheran JV at 8:30 p.m. at Buffalo-Trico.
Granite City boys' hoops has the latest contest, taking on Hazelwood East at 9:30 p.m. to open things up in Collinsville.
Matches continue on Tuesday and Wednesday. Wrestling in Granite City and basketball in Pinckneyville conclude on Tuesday.
