EA-WR, ROXANA HAVE GOOD SHOWINGS IN CARTERVILLE — East Alton-Wood River junior Drew Sobol led a good contingency of wrestlers on the mat for the Oilers and Roxana Shells on Saturday at the Class 1A Carterville Sectional.
Roxana advanced four and EA-WR qualified three wrestlers for the individual state tournament which begins Thursday at Champaign's State Farm Center on the campus of the University of Illinois.
Sobol was the lone sectional champion out of the group, finishing first at 106 pounds. He picked up a pin in 1:58 over Litchfield's Bailey Powell in the finals.
Jarod Foiles (132), Alex Maguire (138) and Brett Nyswonger (220) of the Shells all placed second in Carterville, as did Zac Blasioli (152) of the Oilers. EA-WR's Zach Kincade (195) and Roxana's Owen Robinson (285) got through with fourth place finishes.
CARPENTER TO REPRESENT CM AT STATE — Brandon Carpenter will represent the Civic Memorial Eagles at the Class 2A state tournament beginning Thursday at the State Farm Center in Champaign.
Carpenter nabbed fourth place at the 2A Mahomet-Seymour Sectional on Saturday to qualify for the state tournament.
The other sectional wrestler for the Eagles, senior Jordan Stagner, came up just short of a state berth.
ALTON, GRANITE CITY GET WRESTLERS THROUGH AT BOLINGBROOK — The Alton Redbirds moved on two wrestlers, while the Granite City Warriors advanced one to state from the Class 3A Bolingbrook Sectional on Saturday.
Alton's Connor Broyles was the star of the day for the Redbirds. Broyles won a sectional title at 132 pounds, picking up a 3-2 decision over Juan Bazaldua of New Lenox Providence Catholic in the title bout.
Broyles will be joined at state by AHS teammate and fellow senior Alejandro Lopez. Lopez finished fourth at 145 pounds to qualify for state for the first time.
Granite City's Kyle Thompson will be the lone representative for the Warriors at state. Thompson nabbed third place at 160 pounds to advance.
The 3A individual state tournament begins Thursday at U of I's State Farm Center in Champaign.
ALTON'S HEISTAND ADVANCES TO STATE — Alton's Ashley Heistand will be the lone representative from the Greater Alton Area at the girls' bowling state tournament beginning Friday at The Cherry Bowl in Rockford.
Heistand accumulated 1,263 pins on Saturday at the Johnston City Sectional to finish second out of the bowlers on non-advancing teams and third overall individually. The top five bowlers on a non-advancing team qualify for the state tournament.
Alton competed as a team at sectionals, but came up short, finishing seventh with 5,522 pins. The top four teams advanced to state. Salem was the team champion with 5,835 pins.
Civic Memorial had two bowlers competing individual at the sectional too, Ashley Westbrook and Brittany Dickerson. Both saw their seasons come to a close on Saturday, unable to advance through the rugged sectional field.
