GIRLS' CROSS COUNTRY
KERPAN LEADS GREATER ALTON AREA RUNNERS AT STATE — The Roxana Shells competed as a team and East Alton-Wood River's Haley Kerpan competed individually Saturday in the Class 1A state cross country race at Detweiller Park in Peoria.
Kerpan brought home the distinction of the highest-placing Greater Alton area runner with a 71st place finish and a time of 19:26. There were 208 participants in the race. Unfortunately, only the top 25 earn all-state honors, so Kerpan missed becoming the first all-state girls' runner for the Oilers.
Senior Kyrston Scifres paced the Shells, finishing 77th in 19:32, but earning 50 points toward the team score. As a team Roxana placed 25th with 605 points. Tori Fulgham remains the only Roxana girls' runner to earn all-state honors.
Other contributing Shells toward the team score were: Michaela Tarpley, Shalyn Edwards, Victoria Tarpley and Alexis Stumpf. Sarah Stover and Jaidyn Peebles rounded out the Roxana runners at state.

O'Fallon's Gold team won the championship with 5,503 pins, while Jersey's A team, Belleville East's A team, Salem's A squad and Collinsville's Purple team rounded out the top five.
Individually, O'Fallon's Andrew Orr was the champ, collecting 1,185 pins. Derek Henderson of Alton's Red unit was tops for the Birds with a 24th placement after accumulating 1,032 pins.
