EXPLORERS GET TWO WINS AT EFFINGHAM ST. ANTHONY'S TOURNEY — The Marquette Explorers ended in a 3-3 tie with Harrisburg on Friday before picking up a 3-0 win over Greenville and an 8-0 win over Carlyle on Saturday at the Effingham St. Anthony's Tournament.
Overall it was a good weekend for the Marquette booters, who are now 2-1-1 on the young season.
Against Harrisburg, Zach Weinman logged a pair of goals, while Riley Velloff had the other. Assists came from Chris Hartrich, Noah Fahenstock and Adam Hammond. Brandon Sanfilippo made eight saves in goal.
The Explorers led 1-0 vs. Harrisburg, but the Bulldogs scored three times in the second half while Marquette scored once.
On Saturday the Explorers fared better. Starting with Greenville, Sanfilippo picked up the shutout in the net, corralling six saves. Goals came from Hammond and Weinman. One of Weinman's goals came on a penalty kick in the 28th minute. Hartrich had two assists in the contest.
Marquette were tagged with five yellow cards against the Comets.
Later in the day vs. Carlyle, the Explorers really got the offense revving. Weinman scored three more times to give him seven goals in the three games in Effingham. He also had an assist in the game, while Hartrich and Tony Vitale each had a goal and an assist. Other goals came from: Adam Johnes, Brendan Nickloy and Ryan Ely. Jon Stewart picked up two assists, while Kwame Ngwa and Jacob File joined the fun with an assist apiece.
Marquette is back in action at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Lebanon in its opener at Gordon Moore Park.
REDBIRDS GO 1-1-1 IN ALTON INVITE — The Alton Redbirds played host to their annual tournament at Gordon Moore Park on Friday and Saturday, posting a 1-1-1 mark and taking third.
With the three matches in the tourney, the Birds are now 2-1-1 overall on the season and prepare to open Southwestern Conference play at Granite City at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.
Dunlap won the title at the Alton Invitational with a 1-0-2 mark. Edwardsville also went 1-0-2, but Dunlap won a tiebreaker. Triad rounded out the field with a 0-2-1 record.
AHS opened with Triad on Friday, picking up its lone win in the tournament by the score of 4-2. Eric Ferenbach paced the Redbirds with all four goals in the game. Skylar Funk and Nick Hatfield each had assists in the win. Tied 2-2 at the break, Alton scored a pair of unanswered goals to get the victory.
Devin Colley garnered the win in goal, securing four saves in the match.
Alton came back on Saturday tying Dunlap 2-2. Hatfield fired in both goals while Ferenbach dished out one assist. Colley tallied eight saves in goal.
Finally the Birds finished up with EHS. Colley gobbled up nine saves, but unfortunately it wasn't enough as the Tigers won 3-0 as Alton couldn't muster much on offense. Edwardsville goalie Brandon Wilson only had to make one save in goal.
EA-WR KICKS OFF CARLINVILLE TOURNAMENT WITH A PAIR OF WINS — The East Alton-Wood River Oilers started the Carlinville Kickoff Tournament on Saturday with a pair of wins.
The Oilers started with a 1-0 victory over Hillsboro. Zac Lafferty scored the lone goal, while Nick Barrett had four saves and earned the shutout in the net.
EA-WR followed up the win over the Hiltoppers with another shutout, beating Gillespie 4-0.
Lafferty, Josh Turner, Jordan Schmigdal and Luke Sims recorded goals for the Oilers, while Sims and David Barrett picked up assists. Nick Barrett garnered the shutout again, this time only having to make one save.
The Oilers are now 3-0-1 on the young season and continue play in Carlinville this week.
ROXANA PICKS UP A TIE AND A LOSS TO START CARLINVILLE KICKOFF — The Roxana Shells ended in a scoreless tie with Lincolnwood and stumbled against Springfield Lutheran 2-0 on Saturday.
The Shells are now 1-2-1 on the season and continue play in Carlinville this week.
CM FALLS 4-0 TO MASCOUTAH IN METRO CUP — The Civic Memorial Eagles continued play in the Metro Cup on Saturday, losing 4-0 to the Mascoutah Indians.
The Eagles are now 1-3 on the young season and return to action in their Mississippi Valley Conference opener at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday vs. Jersey at the Bethalto Sports Complex.
GRANITE CITY LOSES TO ROCHESTER — The Granite City Warriors welcomed Rochester to town on Saturday and came away with a 3-1 loss.
The Warriors are now 0-2-1 on the season.
Rochester grabbed a 3-0 lead at the break on Saturday before Zach Druhe was able to find the back of the net in the second half to salvage a goal for GCHS. Jacob Cook earned the assist for the Warriors, while Ryan Houston had eight saves in goal.
Granite City gets back in Southwestern Conference action at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, playing host to the Alton Redbirds.
MARQUETTE TAKES THIRD AT BLASTOFF TOURNAMENT — The Marquette Catholic Explorers played host to their annual Blastoff Tournament on Saturday at Spencer T. Olin Golf Course inside Gordon Moore Park in Alton.
There were 13 teams at the event, with O'Fallon earning the team title with a score of 349. Edwardsville came in second with a 351, while the host Explorers were third, carding a 376. The rest of the field rounded out with: Effingham (385), Collinsville (386), Granite City (399), Civic Memorial (414), Effingham St. Anthony (415), Alton (424), Auburn (426), Roxana (430), Camp Point Central (469) and McCluer North (544).
O'Fallon's Emily Marrs earned medalist honors, carding a 73. CM's Sara Gwillim was the top area girl, she came in second with an 85.
Other local medalists were: Megan Keel of Granite City (89) in 11th place, Izzy Roberts of the Eagles (90) in 12th place and Ellie Kane of Marquette (91) and Andrea Mellenthin of Roxana (91) tied in 13th place.
Morgan Bemis paced the Redbirds with a 94 at the Blastoff.
ROXANA TOPS ALTON IN FRIDAY DUAL — The Roxana Shells visited Rolling Hills Golf Course in Godfrey on Friday to take on the Alton Redbirds and picked up the win.
Roxana carded a 197 to outdistance the Redbirds, who shot a 213.
Andrea Mellenthin was the medalist for the Shells with a 41. Other scorers for Roxana were: Bailey Sharpmack (44), Sam Edwards (55) and Amanda Morgan (57).
Alton was guided by Morgan Bemis and Annie Maynard, who each shot 50s. Other scorers for the Birds were: Paige Wittman (54) and Katie Keller (59).
MARQUETTE SPLITS TWO GAMES ON FINAL DAY IN ROXANA — The Marquette Catholic Explorers finished up the Roxana Tournament with a sixth place finish.
The Explorers bested Dupo 25-23, 25-18 on Saturday, but lost to rival East Alton-Wood River 25-19, 25-22 in the fifth-place game to end up in sixth place overall.
The Explorers are now 2-3 on the season. They head to Litchfield at 6 p.m. Tuesday and then battle rival Civic Memorial at 6 p.m. on Wednesday on the road.
Against Dupo on Saturday Anna Daugherty logged five kills to lead the way for Marquette. Marissa Nosco dished out 10 assists and had 13 service points, while Michelle Carmeron had three aces, Katie Gierer picked up 16 digs and Brittany Pace had five blocks.
In the game with EA-WR, it was Daugherty and Cameron with five kills apiece, while Daugherty and Andria Pace provided two aces each, Gierer had 16 digs, Cameron had three blocks and Nosco dished out nine assists.
